Barking up the right tree 🌳🎨

In this Michaela Matches, she uses Tusc & Pine Oils to match the gray-brown color of natural bark.

The mix starts neutral, then small shifts in warmth bring it closer to the real branch. A nice little reminder that even everyday neutrals have more color hiding in them than you’d expect.

Why is Mike SNEAKING AROUND our competitors?! 🕵️

He's going deep behind enemy lines today. When you work at Jerry's Artarama, you get used to a certain standard, so he pulled his baseball cap down low and went to scope out the retail battlefield.

Turns out the biggest competition isn't always another art store.

Michaela took on denim this week, matching two washes straight off a pair of jeans.

The dark wash started as Cobalt Blue and Mars Black, then a touch of Raw Umber Warm took the edge off until it sat right against the fabric. For the light wash, she started from that dark mix and added Titanium White, with a little more Raw Umber Warm and Mars Black to land the faded look.

All four colors are Tusc & Pine oils: Titanium White, Cobalt Blue, Raw Umber Warm, and Mars Black.

This feels like the right palette for the edge of summer 🍂

Quick marker tip from Jerry’s LIVE Workshop #8 🎨

If a marker tip starts looking worn or frayed, you may be able to flip the nib instead of replacing the whole marker.

Gently pull the nib out with tweezers or a nib tool, turn it around, and reinsert the unused end. It’s a simple way to get more life out of your markers.

Please don’t ask where the brick came from 🧱

In this Michaela Matches, she uses Tusc & Pine Oils to color match a brick, which is a very specific thing to bring to the palette.

The mix starts with Quinacridone Red Deep and Permanent Yellow Light to build that warm brick base. From there, Michaela adjusts the value with Titanium White, deepens the color with Lamp Black, and brings in a touch of Cerulean Blue Pastiche to get closer to the natural surface.

Odd subject. Very useful color lesson.

Soft pastels and oil pastels can work together, but the order matters 🎨

Because soft pastel is dry pigment and oil pastel has an oil base, the two can react in ways that make your surface harder to control. In thicker areas, the dry pigment may absorb oil from the oil pastel and darken more than expected.
