A pair is not the amateur move. Stopping at the pair is.
Two matching pillows at the corners of a sofa give you a base. They set the dominant color or pattern.
They anchor the seating. That is a legitimate first step, not a mistake.
The reason a pair alone can look flat is that it is only the first step. And most people treat it like the finished composition.
You build in layers everywhere else in a room. Do it here too.
Add a third pillow in a different pattern that pulls a color out of the pair. Add a lumbar that brings in texture or a secondary tone.
Now the pair is doing its real job as a foundation, and the sofa has movement on top of it.
So when someone tells you pairs are wrong, they are only half right. The pair is the anchor.
It was never meant to be the whole thing.
