Today’s featured vintage vinyl is American Fool from John Cougar (Mellencamp). Released in 1982, American Fool was the fifth studio album from the American musician. Mellencamp was struggling to find his signature sound. He had been working on a new song, “Jack & Diane,” which the record company felt was underwhelming. The record company considered canceling the album and releasing Mellencamp from the label. They ultimately allowed him to finish the album. Mellencamp was happy with the album, while the record company believed it would bomb. Mellencamp proved to be right. American Fool would prove to be his commercial breakthrough, holding number one on the Billboard charts for nine weeks. “Hurts So Good” and “Jack & Diane” just missed number one on the charts helped to make the album and the artist a success.
