Ikebana is a traditional Japanese style of floral design. The name can be translated to “the way of flowers” in English. Stemming from the root word of “ikeru” which means “to arrange” or “to keep alive.” It emphasizes the need to care for flowers and bring them to life through attentiveness and care and understanding. True ikebana design follows a list of principles that balance line, negative space, and structural balance. A vertical scalene triangle is used as a reference for stem placement with three main flower types.
“Shin” is the tallest stem representing Heaven
“Soe” is the middle stem and represents Humanity
“Tai” is the shortest stem representing Earth
There are different styles of ikebana floral design, all of which honor the current growing season of flowers and plants. The emphasis on seasonality adds into their sustainability and versatility for events. Ikebanas seldom require floral foam. They use reusable or biodegradable mechanical features like weighted floral pin frogs, flexible bamboo or other branches / sticks, or in modern times - chicken wire.
The contemporary ikebana commonly isn’t true ikebana in practicality, but they are ikebana inspired pin-frog designs or small arrangements that charm you with the essence of the ikebana ways. 🫶🏼
One of my favorite things about ikebana is its customizability / versatility for events. Essentially we can turn literally anything into an ikebana / pin frog vessel. I like to make mine permanent ikebana vessels by using E6000 to secure my mechanics into the vessels and containers I use. If anyone takes them home at the end of the night, they have a the perfect vessel to re-use over and over again to make beautiful arrangements with whatever they find outside.
