In small, shared spaces like bathrooms, function should always inform form. I ask clients with partners or families what their mornings actually look like. Are two people trying to get ready over one sink? Then a double vanity may make sense. If only one sink is really needed, that opens up the room for a different layout and better use of storage.

Here, the placement of the vanities, shower, and cabinetry was planned around making the morning routine as easy as possible. Once that foundation is right, the finishes can do their part. The floor tile, countertop, plumbing fixtures, and soft window treatments keep the room feeling calm and pulled together, with just enough color in the curtains to give it some personality.

When I’m renovating a home with history, I’m not trying to make everything look “historic.” I want to understand the house first. What’s worth preserving? What feels original to the architecture? And where can something new be introduced without feeling out of place?

This project was a Colonial Revival, so respecting the existing character of the home was an important part of the process.

The stair hall is a good example. We selected Romantic Bosphorus by Iksel Decorative Arts, a panoramic landscape that had the scale and sense of movement the space needed. From there, I worked with Iksel to customize the composition specifically for the stairwell.

This wasn’t simply a matter of choosing a beautiful wallcovering and installing it. We looked at how the scene would work with the staircase, the height of the walls, the upper landing, and the different views you experience as you move through the space. The trees rise with the stairs, while the landscape continues onto the landing, so the image feels connected to the architecture rather than applied on top of it.

The finished installation has the presence of a hand-painted mural and gives you something different to notice depending on where you are in the stair hall.

That’s what I enjoy about working with older homes. There are usually details, proportions, and materials already telling you something about the house. My job is to recognize what should stay, restore what makes sense, and make sure anything new feels considered within that existing framework.

I love the view from the kitchen sink here. The warm white of the cabinetry and countertops keeps the room feeling clean and quiet, while the oversized, almost door-like windows open it up to the outdoor space. In the summer, all that green becomes a feature of the room in its own right, like a changing piece of art.

Let’s talk kitchen islands. They can do a lot for a space, but the right size and layout really depend on how you use your kitchen.

One of the biggest benefits is the separation they create between the working side of the kitchen and the place where everyone inevitably gathers. Guests can pull up a stool, kids can do homework, and food can be set out without everyone ending up directly in the prep zone.

I prefer an island at one level, with one uninterrupted counter whenever the space allows. No raised bar section. It gives you more room for cooking, serving, wrapping gifts, or whatever else the kitchen becomes a home base for that day.

An island is also a great opportunity to do something a little different. I love when it feels more like a piece of furniture, whether that means a contrasting finish, a furniture-style baseboard detail, or lighting with enough scale to make a statement. And if you fall in love with a larger pendant, use fewer of them.

How to master the "Warm Transitional" kitchen trend 🏡✨

If you want a kitchen that feels clean and modern but avoids looking cold, this design layout is your blueprint.

Here is how we achieved the perfect balance:

1. Ditch the Stark White: Instead of cold white cabinets, we used a gentle taupe/mushroom shade for the shaker doors. It adds instant depth.

2. Layer Natural Wood Elements: The flooring, the island face, and the custom range hood all share similar warm undertones, pulling the entire room together seamlessly.

3. Keep Hardware Minimal: Clean, elongated brass pulls elevate the cabinetry without cluttering the visual field.

4. Statement Lighting: Rather than heavy fixtures, slim-profile disk pendants keep the sightlines open across the room.

Why choose beige when you can have print! Powder rooms, bathrooms, and small spaces are prime areas in the home to express your personality. Here, a metallic wall treatment adds movement and interest to the room, while a large round mirror reflects the space, making it feel more open.

Bathroom plumbing fixtures and hardware are like jewelry for a room. They can dress it up or dress it down. Don’t overlook these details or keep the builder-grade chrome just because it functions. Plumbing fixtures add so much visual weight to a space, and they’re products you actually touch and use, so you can feel the difference in quality. It’s an opportunity to show off a little in your own home. The same goes for lighting!

Crafting extravaganza continues! I had a blast making these and loved scavenging for random stuff, and trash to add to the control boards. Spray paint has become my new favorite thing - it's amazing what you can do with it!
