A new piece has joined our art hallway: a pencil-signed print by Virginia artist Ed Roebuck.⁣
⁣
Roebuck was a nationally recognized artist based in Hampton Roads, known especially for his remarkably detailed graphite work. His drawings often transformed graphite into something almost photographic, using subtle shifts in tone, light and texture to give ordinary subjects an extraordinary presence.⁣
⁣
Roebuck also holds an unusual place in Norfolk art history. In 1981, during a dispute involving works from one of his exhibitions, he famously entered the gallery and painted enormous black Xs across dozens of his own paintings rather than allow them to be sold at auction. The story made national news and became part of his artistic legacy.⁣
⁣
This piece is a still life of nuts rendered in Roebuck’s characteristic monochromatic realism. The image bears Roebuck’s signature within the print and is separately signed by the artist in pencil.⁣
⁣
Now hanging in the art hallway and available for purchase.⁣

⚡️ POWER OUTAGE ⚡️⁣
⁣
Due to a transformer fire in the Ghent area, businesses (and residential properties) throughout Ghent are currently experiencing a power outage.⁣
⁣
We’ll be hanging out at the shop for a while in hopes that power is restored soon. If you need something in the meantime, we can still check you out using our mobile register.⁣
⁣
Depending on how long the outage lasts, it may impact dinner service at Ceremony tonight. We’ll post another update as soon as power is restored and remove this post once we’re back up and running.⁣
⁣
Thank you for your patience and understanding. ⁣

Tomorrow (Sunday) is the final day to view our private collection of limited and rare works by Itzchak Tarkay at Less Than + Ceremony.⁣
⁣
Across the collection, there’s a quiet visual language that makes Tarkay’s work immediately recognizable. Women appear absorbed in their own worlds, with their eyes closed and their gaze turned inward. Cafés, gardens, interiors, patterned fabrics and elegant furnishings create intimate settings, while bold blocks of color, expressive lines and flattened planes give each composition its distinctive sense of rhythm.⁣
⁣
There’s something especially compelling about the way Tarkay portrayed his subjects. They aren’t posed for us so much as they are caught in a private moment, surrounded by color and atmosphere. Seen together, the works reveal the consistency of that vision while showing the subtle differences in how he approached each composition.⁣
⁣
This private collection leaves Ceremony tomorrow, so if you’ve been meaning to see it, this is your last chance.⁣
⁣
Mention you’re here to see the Tarkay collection, and enjoy a nonalcoholic beverage from Unified Ferments while supplies last.⁣

⁣
Sold: this detailed numbered print of zebras at a watering hole by March, originally drawn in 1978 and printed in 1987 as 19/200. The work was a documented award winner at the Boardwalk Art Show in 1979 and again in 1987, and has just sold from the Art Hall.⁣
⁣
Coming soon: an original 2012 acrylic on canvas by Virginia Beach artist Edward A. Obermeyer, featuring a dramatic barrel wave in deep green and teal with his signature highly textured white crest.⁣

New to Less Than: Dip solid shampoo + conditioner bars. ⁣
⁣
The shampoo bars are pH balanced, sulfate free and made with ingredients like coconut and sweet almond oils, shea butter, vegan squalane, ceramides and hydrolyzed rice protein. The conditioner bars are packed with nourishing oils and butters, including prickly pear, plum, amla, baobab, coconut, almond and shea.⁣
⁣
And they last. A full-size shampoo bar can replace multiple bottles of shampoo, while a conditioner bar can last 6–14 months depending on how you use and store it. That’s a lot of showers without a plastic bottle.⁣
⁣
We’re starting with three scents:⁣
🌹 Rosewater + Jasmine⁣
🥥 Coconut + Almond⁣
🌿 Wild Sage + Vetiver⁣
⁣
They’re a little more of an investment than other bars we carry, but the size, concentration, ingredients and longevity make a pretty compelling case to give them a try.⁣
⁣
If you’re looking for a new shampoo or conditioner bar, give Dip a try. And if we’re missing your favorite scent, let us know what you want to see next.⁣

A couple of new originals have found their way onto the art hallway at Ceremony.⁣
⁣
“Filled the Void” by Monique Dunham is a layered multimedia piece made from found materials, printed matter, labels, and paint. “Untitled” by Marcia Woodford brings a burst of expressive color to the hallway through vibrant, gestural flower petals.⁣
⁣
Both are signed, one-of-one originals and available to take home.⁣
⁣
Come see them in person at Less Than .Ceremony.⁣

We’ve been a little busy at Less Than + Ceremony, spending the last several weeks editing the spaces, the flow, the ambience, the food, and the service based on what we’ve learned since opening.⁣
⁣
If you visit Ceremony again, you’ll notice a redesigned entry area with a new bench for anyone waiting for their guest and lots of plants to explore. We painted the dining room ceiling, adjusted the lighting to better set the mood, added a taller reception desk to make arrivals a little easier, and put in a fan to help keep the dining room comfortable during this hotter-than-usual summer.⁣
⁣
In the bottle shop, we’ve put out case packs for anyone who wants to take home more than a single bottle or can of their favorite drink. Case packs receive 10% off at the register, and this is actually the first step in a larger project we’ve been working on that we’ll be able to share more about soon. We’re also developing a way to bring Ceremony offsite for dinners, parties, special events, weddings, and other gatherings, so there’s more to come there as well.⁣
⁣
Less Than has had a bit of a reset too. We added more wall shelving, created storage underneath the refill station, removed the old work table, and replaced it with a smaller, easier-to-navigate workstation. The new layout gives everyone more room to browse, shop, and refill while also making it easier to navigate the shop with strollers and wheelchairs.⁣
⁣
In the kitchen, we’ve started working on our fall menu, which means the summer menu will be leaving us soon. We’ll give you a gentle reminder before the change so there’s still time to come in and enjoy some of the dishes before they’re gone. ⁣
⁣
If you haven’t been in for a while, come take a look around. We’d love to have you back.⁣
