This is my dehydrator. Her name is Roz. She is the queen of preserving my hot peppers and tomatoes. Dehydrated cherry tomatoes (basically, but not technically, sun dried tomatoes) way of preserving the taste of summer. They pair well with sautéed spinach, in pasta dishes, blended into pesto and put on toast, snacked straight, etc. etc. and have a million times more flavor than any fresh tomato that could be shipped to our supermarkets in January. So before you give up and throw out your tomato plants, collect some goodies for your future self. You won’t regret it.

! We met an important (to me) milestone for the summer—my okra is officially taller than I am. They are always one of my favorites in the garden. Their flowers are beautiful—they are related to hibiscus, and flaunt big, tropical, short-lived white blooms. The vibrant-red heirloom varieties are so beautiful in a landscape. Pests don’t bother them. Insanely productive. As always, we’ll be at from 9-12 tomorrow (Saturday morning!) I can’t wait to see you there 🥰

These zinnias have been loving this heat 🥰 just a reminder, our mornings have been delightful and in the 70s, sometimes low 80s 🥰 come get some sunshine before the heat hits on Saturday from 9-12! Our okra is full swing, we’ll have our bodi (aka long beans/yard long beans) ground cherries, and tomatoes for days. We hope to see you there!

This jungle is messy. This jungle is WILD. This jungle is full of life, edible and some not. You can’t talk to a neighbor without having a dozen docile halictid bees hang out on your arm—you can’t pull out a vine without a sassy Carolina mantis climbing out to give you the eye over her favorite snacking spot. I sometimes look towards my garden with anxious eyes and only see the weeds and the long list of tasks that need to be completed, but I need to remind myself of the life and balance that we have revived from a spot that was nothing but short, manicured grass only a few months ago. Mother Nature is waiting. Go dig up your lawn 🤙🏻

Look at this healthy chonk ❤️ what am I going to do about him? Nothing. Why? Because he’s nearly full grown and he hasn’t decimated this tomatillo. He has no siblings that I’ve found. And the coolest thing? You can’t see it, but this plant is actively sending out chemical signals to communicate with its natural predators—they now will know where to find him. This video was taken yesterday, but today I wasn’t able to find him, and the plant still has plenty of leaves and fruit to recover. I don’t act unless a crop is actively being decimated beyond repair. And usually, I’ll rip that crop out, and try again with some sort of row cover. If you encourage balance in your garden, nature will reward you. But you need to give up on the idea of perfection, be ok with trying again ☺️

Radishes: I had to learn to love this one. We never ate them growing up, and the first time I grew them my immediate comment was “how can something so beautiful taste like literal dirt?” Turns out I was doing it wrong. First off, pick them young, before they get tough. These are good chopped in salads. But my favorite way to cook them is roasting them on high heat with olive oil, herbs and garlic. My husband claims “they’re better than potatoes and with less calories.”
