This week brought a wave of new beginnings. Coming back from the summer break, I find myself right at the starting line across multiple projects simultaneously. Balancing when to take on new work is an ongoing test, and no matter how meticulously you plan a renovation, something unexpected always shifts the schedule and days disappear.
Renovations are slow because we are humans, not robots. Right now, looking at three different properties all in their earliest phases, I am intentionally slowing down. I want to see these homes as they are right now. I’m studying the original plaster, the patch repairs, and the quirky stories told by secret compartments or hidden storage before they are entirely reconfigured for what these families need. Some of those details will stay; in other spaces, functionality has to win out.
It is easy to get caught up in the polished before-and-after reveals that flood social media, but that skips the real work. You don’t always know exactly how a path will unfold, and finding joy in the slow, unglamorous reality of the beginning matters just as much.
Grateful for four walls, for spaces that hold stories through objects, and for clients who value that same art of storytelling:)
