JEANNE is a vintage jewelry name worth remembering. Its history traces to New York’s Mark Dottenheim, who first used the JEANNE name for pearl jewelry in 1919—a lovely connection to the faux pearl drops on this beauty.

Here, a striking black-and-white cameo meets textured goldtone, a graceful draped chain, and two swinging faux pearls. The effect is wonderfully theatrical, with all the romance of Victorian Revival style.

Goldette is a name vintage jewelry lovers should know. Ben Gartner’s New York company, Circle Jewelry Products, began using the Goldette name in 1958, creating costume jewelry with the romantic presence of older treasures. Victorian influences, elaborate chains, and antique-inspired details became part of its signature appeal.

This signed scarab bracelet brings that fascination with the past beautifully to life: colorful scarabs framed in twisted goldtone borders, alternating with ornate Etruscan Revival links. Every little detail invites a closer look—and suddenly a simple outfit feels rather extraordinary.

Is your brooch Victorian? Here are three simple indicators that will help you identify a Victorian brooch. ⬇️

Look for these three construction indicators:

1. The hinge should be tubular.
2. The pin should be longer than the brooch.
3. The catch should be a C-clasp.

This one does not have a C-clasp, but when you look closer, you can see that the brooch was altered later. It most likely had a C-clasp originally, which was replaced with this modern rollover clasp.

Sometimes, you just need to look closer.

She couldn’t sew or sketch—but she built a fashion empire. This is costume jewelry you should know about: Hattie Carnegie.

Before her name appeared on beautiful jewelry, she was Henrietta Kanengeiser, a young immigrant from Vienna who arrived in New York with her family in 1900.

She worked in hat shops and at Macy’s before opening a tiny shop with her friend Rose Roth in 1909. Rose made the dresses; Hattie made the hats.

What Hattie had was an extraordinary eye—and the ability to guide talented people in bringing her ideas to life. That little shop grew into a fashion destination where women could put together almost an entire wardrobe.

She even had an antiques department. Now that is my kind of shopping!

Her first costume jewelry collection launched in 1939. Jewelry became part of the complete Carnegie look: an expressive finishing touch that could give a simple outfit personality.

And this brooch carries that wonderful Hattie Carnegie signature.

But here is something collectors should know: a signed piece wasn’t necessarily made during her lifetime. Hattie died in 1956, and her name lived on.

The fashion business is generally recorded as closing in 1976, while jewelry bearing the Carnegie name is documented through at least 1979.

From an immigrant working in hat shops to a name we still collect today—this is why I love knowing the history behind our treasures.
