We had a fantastic time partnering with OpenStreetMap and Map RVA for a recent mapping workshop to strengthen the data behind our online interactive Trail map! 🗺️

OpenStreetMap, a global, community-driven mapping platform, relies on volunteers who continually update and refine map information. 🌇 Here in Richmond, Map RVA is a group of local mapping and trail enthusiasts who work hard to keep our regional data accurate, detailed, and up-to-date. Together, their expertise and support are helping us build a more robust and reliable interactive online map for the Capital Trail, making it easier to plan a ride 🚲, find amenities 🍽, or explore the Trail 🚶🏾‍♀️.

Meet Jonce Culbertson, smbw's Summer 2026 Architecture Intern.

An upcoming 5th year Architecture student at Virginia Tech, Jonce brings a thoughtful and design-forward approach to his work. Through his internship, he is excited to work on physical models, help drive the design workflow, and grow as an architect. Featured here are samples of Jonce's work with descriptions below.

Slide 1: Some ideas only make sense in three dimensions. This section model breaks down how the building engages its site, one cut at a time.

Slide 2: Steel meets movement. This dance performance center in Blacksburg, VA sits at the intersection of campus and town, with layers of polycarbonate and aluminum peeling back to turn structure into ornament.

Slide 3: In performance architecture, the staircase is the opening act. Stairs inside and out blur the line between audience and performer. Whether you're sneaking in late or making an entrance, you're part of the show.

Slide 4: Structure is the aesthetic. Steel trusses at varying scales carve out room for performance halls while keeping the floor plate free of columns. The bones are the beauty.

Slide 5: Three sides, three personalities. The building pivots toward Virginia Tech's campus, opens with a dramatic stair entrance, and meets the neighborhood with a bold expressive steel facade.

Slide 6: The upper lobby doesn't just welcome you, it shows off. Glazing traces the path from stair to stage, framing views and flooding the space with light. A performance lobby is also a ballroom.

Meet Grace Keller, smbw's Summer 2026 Interiors Intern.

⁠⁠A junior Interior Design student at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Grace is known for her driven and organized approach to design, as well as her eye for modern interiors. Through her internship, she is excited to gain hands on experience, learn more about the design process, and continue developing her skills as a designer. The bar serves as the heart of Source, creating a central gathering space that draws guests inward. Warm lighting, layered materials, and reflective surfaces work together to create an intimate and immersive atmosphere that encourages connection and conversation.

⁠⁠Slide 2: Custom Front Door
⁠Designed as a sculptural focal point, the custom entry door is crafted from cast resin and patinated copper. Flowing forms and rich materials create a memorable arrival experience while introducing the warmth and craftsmanship found throughout Source.

⁠⁠Slide 3: Custom Staircase
Wrapped in hammered copper, the staircase creates a dramatic transition through the space. Integrated lighting guides visitors upward, transforming movement through the building into a deliberate and immersive experience. ⁠⁠

Slide 4: Vault Tasting Room Experience
⁠The vault tasting room offers an intimate and exclusive setting designed for exploration and discovery. Rotating self serve cocktail taps encourage curiosity and ensure each visit feels unique. ⁠⁠

Slide 5: Look + Feel
Moodboard ⁠Inspired by Kansas City's identity as the City of Fountains, the moodboard establishes the project's foundation through warm metallics, deep tones, and reflective surfaces. The result is a layered atmosphere shaped by water, light, and materiality. ⁠⁠

Slide 6: Custom Wallpaper
⁠Current transforms the movement of water into a flowing hand drawn pattern that introduces rhythm, depth, and motion throughout the space. The wallpaper reinforces the project's connection to water, reflection, and movement while shaping the overall character of the interior.

A space built for the people behind the mission. We had the pleasure of designing the new office for Richmond Memorial Health Foundation, bringing warmth, purpose, and intention into every corner. Custom wall trim, thoughtful signage, and spaces designed for both focus and collaboration. We’re so proud of how this one turned out.
