Anyone having a BBQ this weekend? If so, give this broccoli salad a try. My family loves it! Even my two kiddos. They request this dish all the time. You can also get creative with this and add almond slivers, cauliflower, or many others to make it your family's new tradition. 🀎

Good morning! 🀎 Do I need to post a recipe for this? Nah, I decided I would. Grits are a staple down here in the Deep South, and if you've never tried them, then give it a chance! Cheese grits are my favorite. Paired with fresh tomatoes from your garden or the local farmers market, because I'm not judging. πŸ˜‚πŸ…

Okay, okay!! Hear me out. When I used to craft a lot and sell at a store that my sister and I owned, I would start crafting in the summer. It’s hot, and, as we know, a very popular craft store starts stocking fall items in the summer. It’s a fun activity! You will not regret it come fall. πŸ€ŽπŸŽƒ

Appalachian Life: The Wash Day

In the mountains of Appalachia, Monday was often wash day.

Before electric washers reached many rural homes, families heated water in large iron kettles over wood fires. Clothes were scrubbed by hand on washboards, rinsed in tubs, and hung on clotheslines stretched between trees or porch posts.

Children were expected to help. Boys carried water from springs or wells, while girls helped pin clothes to the line. Fresh sheets snapping in the mountain breeze became a familiar sight across the hollers.

Many families owned only a few sets of everyday clothes, so keeping them clean was important. Wash day was hard work, often taking most of the day, but it was also a time when neighbors stopped by to visit and share news.

The smell of homemade soap, wood smoke, and clean laundry drifting across the hills was once a common part of Appalachian life.

And when the sun went down, tired hands rested on front porches while clean clothes swayed gently in the evening mountain breeze. ❀️

Fact: Hand-washing clothes, heating water outdoors, using washboards, and line-drying laundry were common practices in many Appalachian communities well into the mid-20th century.
