Well… apparently Skyline has gotten tired of stopping at the back door. 😂

For years y’all have trusted Skyline Hearth & Fire with fireplaces, outdoor kitchens, fire features and the stuff that makes a house feel like home.

Now we’ve officially given the outdoor side of the business its own home too:

Basically, if you’ve ever stood in your backyard, stared at it for ten minutes and thought, “Man… we oughta do something with this,” that’s where we come in. 😂

Just with more dirt, more stone, and considerably more Advil.

Very honored that Skyline Hardscapes and Premier Outdoor Living, our hardscape division, was asked to step in and help complete this entrance in time for Friendship’s grand opening.

And this one definitely kept us thinking.

The scope changed during the project, including the overall length of the new entrance. Then we had to figure out how to connect three completely different existing elevations — the left patio, the front entrance, and the right patio — while both existing patios were already running on different slopes.

Basically, the assignment became:
“Make all of this connect… drain properly… meet the doors… tie into the parking lot… and somehow make it not look stupid.” 😂
Challenge accepted.

And while we were figuring all of that out, there were several times we laid large sections, stepped back, decided they weren’t where we wanted them, pulled them back up, made corrections, and laid them again.

Because “close enough” wasn’t going to cut it.

Add in a hard deadline — Friendship needed everything completed in time for their grand opening, with the paving company still needing time to mill the parking lot and make the final tie-in — and there wasn’t exactly much room for error.

What made the project even more rewarding was the response along the way. Members of Friendship’s leadership and staff stopped by to see the progress, and several residents came out almost every day to talk with us. We got to know some great people, and the encouragement and compliments we received while we were working meant more than they probably realized.

Now that it’s finished, we’re incredibly proud of how the new entrance and fire pit came together.

More than anything, though, we’re grateful that Friendship trusted Skyline Hardscapes & Premier Outdoor Living to step in and help get this project across the finish line.

It was truly an honor to be part of getting everything ready for their grand opening.

Most homeowners don’t even realize fireplace remodels are a thing.

They look at an outdated fireplace and assume they’re stuck with it.

Stuck with the old vent-free unit.
Stuck with the dated surround.
Stuck with the way it’s always looked.

They’re not!!

This project is the perfect example.

We took an old, outdated vent-free fireplace and transformed it into a completely new floor-to-ceiling focal point featuring a highly efficient, elegant Kozy Heat Bayport fireplace with sealed combustion, no odor, and a much higher-end finished look.

For this remodel, we:
- removed the old fireplace
- reframed the wall for the new fireplace and venting
- completed the electrical and gas retrofit
- created a new hearth with custom rock slab and elevated the fireplace
- reused the existing mantel
- finished the transformation with Glen Canyon Ledgestone

The result is more than just a better-looking fireplace.

It’s cleaner.
More efficient.
Better performing.
And it completely changes the feel of the room.

That’s the part most people don’t know:
You may not be stuck with the fireplace you have.

A great patio starts long before the last paver goes down.

Everybody loves the finished pictures.

Perfect joints. Clean borders. Nice pattern. New furniture sitting on top.

But this right here is the part that determines whether that patio still looks good years from now.

Proper excavation.
Open-graded base.
3/8" chip bedding.
Correct pitch and elevations.
Straight lines.
Tight joints.
And taking the time to set every paver the way it’s supposed to be set.

Because pavers are the pretty part.

What’s underneath them is the important part.

Anybody can make a patio look good the day it’s finished. The trick is building one that doesn’t start looking like a roller coaster after a couple Virginia winters.
