It seemed like a great idea at the time : but aluminum expands and contracts with heat in a way that can loosen connections over time. That looseness creates resistance, which leads to overheating and an increased fire risk.

How can you tell? Check for the letters "AL" stamped on the wiring insulation, or look for connections marked "AL-CU." If you're unsure, a licensed electrician can take a closer look.
