SMART BULBS… A LUXURY OR COST-SAVING OPPORTUNITY?

Just last week we finished our basement for the kids, and we couldn’t wait to put the finishing touches on the movie theater!

The 100″ projector screen was finally up, the projector mounted to the ceiling, and the Amazon fire stick (needed to convert the projector to a smart projector) was on its way!

The only thing left to do was the lighting…

The problem, however, was that all the basement lights were on one circuit. This meant that when we dimmed the movie theater lights, all the other lights in the basement dimmed as well.

The reason this presented a problem was that if Mom and Dad were hanging out in the game room while the kids were watching a movie, we didn’t want the game room lights to also dim.

The solution was to separate the lights so that each section of the basement had its own lighting.

Sounds easy enough right?

Well, for an electrician and nearly $500-$600 in parts and labor, sure!

To split each room, we needed to put all rooms on its own circuit. This meant the 4 bulbs in the movie theatre would need its own wiring, the 6 in the playroom would need its own wiring, and the 4 in the game room would need its own wiring.

Then each room would need its own dimmer switches so the lighting could be controlled individually.

We had already spent thousands of dollars on finishing the basement, and the last thing we wanted to do was spend more on wiring the different sections individually.

ENTER THE SMART BULB SOLUTION!

Instead of hiring an electrician and hard-wiring all the rooms individually, we decided to go SMART! This way, all we needed was to buy the Smart Bulbs and NOTHING else…

We started with the movie theatre and bought 4 smart bulbs (Philips Hue Started Kit with 4 bulbs – $119). Problem solved for the movie theatre!

We could now control all movie theatre lighting separate from the rest of the basement with a simple click of a button on our smartphone.

But to take things one step further, we decided to pair the bulbs with a wireless dimmer switch that mounts directly on the wall.

This way, for those who didn’t have the app, or if the kids wanted to dim the lights, they could simply dim the lights using the Smart Dimmer Switch (Philips Hue Dimmer Switch – $24.99).

So for a grand total of $143.99, we completed our movie theatre lighting with smart lighting and we achieved the same objective that we would have if we spent $500-$600 for an electrician to come in and hardwire the lights individually.

As you can see, sometimes, it pays to go Smart… especially if you’re trying to split lighting throughout your home and you want to avoid tearing into walls.
