The end is in sight!

Friday will be the last day you can buy raffle tickets to be entered into the prize draw. Thanks for everyone so far who has bought tickets to benefit the Rochester Historical Society.

We will also be having limited hours during the Labor Day Weekend but rest assured - we will post the draw, the winners, and reach out to those whose tickets are picked as promptly as possible!

Ned Kelly’s 44 kg armour, 1879

In 1879, Australian bushranger and outlaw Ned Kelly devised a plan to create bulletproof armour and wear it during shootouts with the police. He and other members of the Kelly gang had their own armour suits and helmets crafted from plough mouldboards, either donated by sympathisers or stolen from farms. The boards were heated and then beaten into shape over the course of four to five months, most likely in a crude bush forge.

The gang was eliminated in an 1880 police shootout, as the cumbersome armour severely restricted movement and left their lower bodies unprotected.

Ned’s armour eventually ended on display in the the State Library of Victoria. The helmet, breastplate, backplate and shoulder plates show 18 bullet marks.

We've just purchased a sizable collection of antique purses of the finest kind- mainly from Mandalian Mfg. Co to Whiting and Davis, companies founded nearby in Massachussetts and rivals in the creation and patenting of iconic "metal mesh" or "armor" purses.

These are only a few of the 30+ purses we're processing into inventory, with gems such as these landing at .

The height of Chinese s***f bottles - small bottles with stoppers containing powdered to***co- was during the Qianlong era (1736-1736). During the rule of the fifth emperor of the Qing Dynasty, China expanded massively- almost 600,000 square miles- and with these new territories and their resources, growth also occurred in the cultural arts: porcelain, painting and jade carving.

A few of these are in the Qianlong style and possess the chop mark (maker's signature) on the bottom, but verified Qianlong items are exceedingly rare. Instead, many of these items were produced as cultural souvenirs during the earlier 1910s-1930s (using the popular milk glass in the 'Peking' process) and imported into the U.S. as to add to trade after the Boxer Rebellion. It was very vogue to collect them during the 1940s ans 1950s, and were often brought home by those stationed overseas in Asia during WWII and the Korean War.

These'll be priced up after a little more research and be displayed

We just got in a collection of straight razors and other antique barbershop ephemera- here are the gems of the dozen or so items we've just priced into inventory!

These various American and German brands all used steel sourced and shaped from Solingen (once known as the city of blades!). These are the ones that come complete with the original boxes- we have several additional straight razors with Sheffield steel, another major city of steel in the UK. Solingen and Sheffield were the benchmarks of steel and cutlery production from 1880s onwards, heavily providing quality materials to American tools, cutlery, and farm implements.

We also have a Theo & Kochs 1930s barber chair in the back, but that needs a little work!
