Rob Lewbel's background as a union lighting technician in the Los Angeles film industry has laid the foundation for Moonshine Lamp. After fiddling around with a briefcase, some batteries and a few small lightbulbs, Rob handed his completed project assignment to the actors on the set of Pulp Fiction. When they opened the briefcase, a blast of light emanated from within. And, that was just the beginning. Rewiring antique lamps and sourcing out modern hi-tech fixtures has been a mainstay in the career of film industry lighting technicians. So, it was only natural for Rob to transition his knowledge of unique lighting fixture components to his love for design and repurposing found objects.

Spend two days in the Southern California mountains, learning new skills and making something with your own hands. In the lamp making workshop, you will work with wood, glass and electrical components as you build a one-of-a-kind lamp to take home. No experience necessary. Just show up ready to try something new. You’ll get to try your hand at wood carving, glasswork, electrical wiring, and using your own awesome sense of design to create a really cool table lamp. I’m up in Running Springs, California on an acre of land. If you want to bring your own RV or tent, you’re welcome to set that up right here on site.

After out first day of creating, we’ll hang out by the fire and toast with your favorite beverage while sharing accomplishments of the day and along with fabulous life stories

A custom finish for a custom light. This Yorba Linda pool table light was ordered with a copper finish. I’m hand applying a textured copper overlay over the powder coated metal. The result has much more depth and variation than a standard painted finish. This is one of my favorite parts of building, custom lighting: taking an existing Moonshine Lamp design and making a completely personal piece for the space it’s going into.

The Moonshine Lamp Workshops are Officially Open!

This fall, we are opening up our workshop in the Southern California mountains for a series of small hands-on two-day maker experiences.

💡Spend the weekend building your own one of a kind table lamp with me, Rob Lewbel, of Moonshine Lamp.

🪚Or build your own handcrafted wood bench with custom woodworker Adam Hurlbut.

These aren’t demonstration classes. You’ll be in the shop working with the tools and materials, learning new skills, and building your own piece from start to finish.

Each workshop is limited to just 4 participants, and all project materials are included.

Our first workshops begin in October, with additional dates in November and December.

Definitely ups and downs when starting your own business, whether it’s constantly striving to come up with fresh ideas, or working feverishly to stay relevant in the world of Google Search, but that amazing sense of accomplishment when someone taps my work to take a special place in their home is the most rewarding and fulfilling aspect of what we all do as makers.

Always a bit scary committing to a new concept, investing the time and money, and battling the urge to toss the whole idea out because it’s not coming together right out of the gate. I’m on my third version of this concept and refuse to give up. It will happen!!
