Monica’s figurative work has weight, through dynamic mark making and thickly applied paint she achieves a raw, unencumbered rendering of her subjects. There is nothing overly conceptualized here, the works speak for themselves. Her aim - simply to expose the soft and hard parts, the undercurrents of the people in her life. Monica finds her greatest spark of inspiration and hope artistically when the first shimmer of the internal begins to inform the external in her figure work. Join her on Saturday at Engine for a live demonstration, in which she will draw and then paint a member of the audience’s likeness. Learn her tips and tricks to drawing out the figure from the page.

Saturday!!! Y’all!

Come out on Saturday night for an event that our community may be familiar with, though it comes with a twist… the event is “YEE HAW!: a costumed figure drawing event!” Hydra members Ben and Liz will costume themselves in their rootinest tootinest, and pose for a figure drawing course led by Hydra member Monica Davis, who you may know as an experienced figurative artist and figure drawing class director. Bring whatever supplies you like to work with, and perhaps a small donation to support the time of our fabulous models!
