Handed over the keys, said our goodbyes, and wished Susan great luck for a successful run. Look for a mid-March reopen as Kitchen Table Land Park. And we’re off!✨🥳🥂

Last day before handing over the keys—sweeping up and moving out the final tidbits of Details. One last time, we thank you—our wonderful friends and customers for your support. The only bittersweet feelings we have? Not seeing you all each week. Happy Valentines Day—what an epic last day! ❤️💔🥳💁🏻💋🥂

Always loved the light in the front windows. The way it changed—the way it altered the shadows on the grave stones across the street. Strange peeling off the layers. Traveling back undoing what we did. So many memories. Some days I’d like to do it all again, but differently. Ha!

Big, big thanks and much gratitude to everyone who took time from their Saturdays to come into Details to say goodbye—honor the shop one last time—spend precious time and money—making our last day, well, astonishing really. Kevin and I couldn’t be more grateful to you all. Thank you for the support. Thank you for the lovely words. Hugs. Tears. Thank you for being so emotional you couldn’t speak. This last month has been an outpouring of kindness. Yesterday was a high note leaving us dazed and quiet this morning. Here’s to new friends, friendships renewed, kindness, and tender hearts. You have filled us up. We love you all.

Last day. Today won’t be the last post, but it may be the most challenging. My cohort in retail, Rachel—owner of Abode in Half Moon Bay—said it well in her end-of-year post. I’m sure she wouldn’t mind my pinching her words and sentiment. “Small business can get complicated, but the bottom line is quite simple. Brick and mortars need people to walk through the door and purchase. We understand that it is an honor and a privilege when people CHOOSE to spend their money at ABODE. (We’ll insert Details). Small businesses need customers and communities need small businesses. It is a symbiotic relationship. So thank you so much for supporting small when you choose to support us. Sending positivity and good vibes out to all of you as we start this new year, another beginning. Cheers to 2023✨🥂”. Thank you for your support in helping us clear out the store. Our valued customers are the only thing we will miss so please take care of yourselves. If you like having a gift shop in your neighborhood, please support it. Susan should be launching sometime in March. Please give her your patronage. She’s such an awesome woman. We can’t wait to see the reinvention of 2665. Thanks again for everything. K-Lo.

A couple pieces of business before we wind up tomorrow. This summer, we sold a consigned vintage yellow Kitchenaid mixer to a lovely young woman with the perfect vintage vibe. If you are that woman and follow us on social media, the woman that consigned the mixer just found two more attachments—that belong to you—to go along with the whisk. DM me or call the shop @ 916-389-0044. We have them for you! Also, if anyone is interested in keeping up with artist, Linda Meadows, whose colorful art we carried, please find her —-okay. Happy Friday everyone!

Swing in if you need anything before we close—Saturday our last day. Have plenty of greeting cards for the dry spell before the reopening. Still some cozy David Fussenegger throws and pillows needing good homes. Strange seeing the shop leaning out. Thanks to all for supporting us these last weeks. We are so grateful to you all.

So many of our customers, our fabulous customer-friends have come by to ask what’s next? Details was next. Kevin and I plan to pick up travel again—Chicago, Scotland, Ireland, Switzerland, Croatia, Italy, Germany so that Kev can visit the BMW factory and drive the Nurburgring. When our overseas treks are done, we plan to pack the car and do the thing we love most—road trips. Kevin wants to work on his golf game and putter around the garage. I will be finishing my book and cleaning up my studio so that I can continue work on my “faces” project. I like to sketch faces. We will retire our watches to the drawer. Celebrate our 20th-year anniversary and Kevin’s 66th birthday without restriction. We will get proper exercise, eat by 6:00, and sleep without stress of retail issues outside our control. The one thing we will not be able to do is see all of you and this has proven a difficult reality. We will miss you all. My biggest takeaway—the thing you have taught me is to not judge. I’m incredibly grateful to you for this. Kevin and I will be closing Details this Saturday. It’s come so quickly. Please be advised we will be open Wednesday in the midst of potential closing of Riverside Blvd due to tree work. Just come up 2nd and park at Klumps if there is no funeral. Open the rest of the week. We love you all.

Absolutely nothing makes me happier than to see my friends adopted into waiting arms. Two bags full!!! No better way to gift than to give the young or old a beastie from the women workers at Kenana Knitters in Kenya. Lions and tigers and bears, oh my!

Part 3. I arrived home vibrating with a vision. I presented to Kevin—a home and gift shop with a consignment component divided into four sections—a hipper version of the department store concept. At this point you might be thinking the end result was all me. Hardly. Kevin is the grounding influence in our marriage. He’s the guy on the ground holding the string while I fly around w***y nilly like a kite in a stiff wind. We even incorporated into our wedding vows that he would finish what I started. We delved into my vision and stood in the empty space with tape and tape measures. He has strong opinions. Sometimes we went to our corners. He questioned my reasoning. I stood my ground with certain things. And like any good relationship, we came out of negotiations with the beginnings of a shared vision. Enter Marie Balshor. Still struggling with my crazy, moving target, concept. So I set about making her a visual aid—a 15-page cut and pasted brochure in hopes she might begin to feel better about what she was letting happen next door. It worked. Lists, notepads, freshly sharpened pencils, and thrown together business cards in hand, we headed to the Las Vegas Market. Three grueling days of walking concrete floors and talking to vendors 8 hours daily left us exhausted but exhilarated. We were actually going to do this. Details Mercantile Consign was in business. Let the games begin! I was in my happy place. Kev, a bit nervous.

Part 2. And then Marie piled on and asked, “yes, so what will you be doing?” I grinned. Took a pause and said, “Oh. Retail. Went home—got online—booked airfare—said goodbye to Kev and headed to Chicago. A coupla days in the northern burbs with family visiting consignment businesses then downtown to River North for three more scouring the streets for inspiration. Dinner out making notes and sketches. Lunch with my Italian sister Fede, “What?!You’re pregnant?!!” Ending each night walking the Riverwalk feeding off the energy, sitting on the steps sipping a glass of wine, thinking and planning. My notebook, dog-eared and rapidly filling up, and pencils, all in need of sharpening, a constant in my bag. For me. There’s no finer city in the States for a blend of style and hospitality. And for Kev and me, well, that was our main goal. The rest was just the widget. Check back to see how it came together.
