It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to our father Jerry Hensler. He went to heaven today to be with mom.
The shop was Jerry's life and passion. From spending time at the shop as a child with his dad Al, to working there in his youth, returning from Chevrolet in 1965 to work with his dad again and then take over the running of the shop, it was his life. Dad never really fully retired from working at the shop.

With Jerry guiding the shop, we outgrew our Vera street building and moved to our current location in 1969 that was built new. There, we continued to grow in the work that we did, the size of the staff, and our capabilities. All the while, Jerry made sure that we continued to remain dedicated to providing the best craftsmanship and quality possible in the work that we perform. The restoration work that the shop did also allowed Jerry to develop so many good, lasting, and enjoyable friendships with many customers over the years.

Jerry's sons Brian and Scott, after college joined him at the shop too. We were blessed to have been able to work with our parents Jerry and Marlene and be with them every day. Dad had big shoes to fill, but he trained us how to do things right.
Rest easy dad, you taught us well. We've got you covered.

A special "Thank you" to St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Bridgeport
Today we delivered their new Tabernacle table that we custom built for them. The table is oak with the cross on the front made from some very nicely figured curly maple. The table is under the crucifix cross that we also built and was installed just before Easter this year.

What to do with an old Singer sewing machine? We've restored a lot of old Singer and White sewing machines over the years. Some are used, but many are a special family memory of a mom, a grandmother, or a Great-Grandmother.

Often, the upper part of the piece and sewing machine head are in very rough shape and will not be used again for sewing. An option is to retain a lot of the lower pieces, the metal base, and add a tabletop that can be more functional to use.

We have this piece for sale in our booth at the Antique Warehouse on Tittabawassee in Saginaw.

The wrap up and installation today of a special project for the congregation of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Parish in Bridgeport. We custom built and finished a 9' 6" cross out of oak along with getting all of the attachment hardware and support steel fabricated. The corpus was hand carved in Italy.

A special "Thank You" to Father Alberto and Dave Taggett.
Happy Easter!!

The old saying of "You never know what's going to come thru the door" is so true of the pieces that customers bring in for us to restore.

This is a novelty item that was distributed by Canadian cigarette companies to promote their brands many years ago. The cigarette dispenser boxes came in numerous styles and decorative designs. On this box, when you slide the top tambour lid back, it pushes out a drawer with spring loaded arms that contain a cigarette from the storage hopper which the arms then insert into the Scottie dogs' mouth on the front of the piece. The drawer then retracts back in and reloads. We did some repair, reglue, and minor finish work on this piece to restore it so it would work and look presentable again.

It is always cool to see the work, ingenuity, and uniqueness of items like this and to be able to enjoy the craftsmanship of the item. This is a clever little piece of woodworking skill!

A beautiful piece and part of Saginaw history!

We were contacted by Tim from Carrollton regarding a piece of furniture from his wife Beth's family that he had. It was apart, in the garage, needed to be restored, and nobody in the family wanted it. His problem was that he couldn't just throw it out as it was too nice of a piece. So, he contacted us to see if we were interested in it.

Stopping at Tim's home to take a look, I saw that it was a very nicely crafted spoon carved maple princess dresser. More importantly, the tag on the back of the piece said that it was built here in Saginaw by the Stenglein MFG. Co. Stenglein eventually became Saginaw Showcase Co. Although not marked on its back, most likely this original to the piece, German beveled mirror is from the Saginaw Mirror Works - West Side Saginaw.
There was no way that I was going to pass on this piece!

While this princess dresser needed to be restored back to the fine piece it was, we would be very lucky at best to recover our cost by trying to sell it. So, there was only one option being that it is a "home built" Sagianw piece of furniture. I called Tom Trombly at the Castle Museum and told him what we had at the shop and that it belonged there at the Castle Museum - Tom couldn't say "Yes" and "Thank You" fast enough! They already have some Stenglein furniture in their collection and have items that this princess dresser would go with. It all worked out just fine to preserve this piece!

So, does this bring back memories of hanging in the basement at a friend's house when you were a kid - playing some bumper pool, listening to some tunes, and just hanging out?

We recently completed the restoration of this sweet 1950/60s vintage Bay City built Valley bumper pool table. It had been in the owner's family for years and they wanted to have it restored to be used again.

The legs were a mess (water damaged - it was in a basement) and had to be rebuilt along with getting new adjustable aluminum feet. We refinished the case, legs, and cleaned up the original ball bumpers that were still in pretty good shape. Kind of cool that they have the Valley name cast on the tops of them. After putting new felt on the table top and bumpers, the table went back to its owners for new adventures with the next generation of kids.

I get next game!
