Something special is happening at Industrial Treasures this Saturday during the St. Charles Fine Art Show.

Tom Herzberg paints live, 1–5PM.
Chicago illustrator, 16 years teaching at the American Academy of Art, thousands of commissions including Pl***oy and the Chicago Tribune.
He arrives with a concept in mind and the watercolor begins in front of whoever gathers around the drafting board. Conversation flows while the work takes shape. Free. Open to everyone.

Also debuting this weekend:
Three large original paintings by Carl Hayano, a Japanese-American artist whose work was exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago four times and has been in storage since 1988. These are originals, available as a collection.

A spectacular neon piece by Ellen Sandor, a Chicago-based multimedia artist who has spent decades working at the intersection of art, science, and technology, and has been a significant contributor to Chicago's art community. Sandor served as former Artist in Residence at Fermilab. The piece came from a Chicago trading firm where it hung for years and is making its debut at Industrial Treasures this weekend.

Come during the Fine Art Show and make a full day of it in St. Charles.

Three large original paintings just went up on our walls.

The artist is Carl Hayano β€” a Japanese-American artist and NIU faculty member whose work was exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago four times.

These pieces have been in storage since 1988. Originals, available as a collection. Come see them in person.

Watching a painting find itself.

Tom Herzberg painted live here a few months back. He arrived with a concept in mind β€” then the watercolor began. James caught the whole thing on time-lapse.

Tom talks while he works. Walks through every decision. Former students from his years at the American Academy of Art keep showing up for these events because it's the same experience they had in his classroom β€” and they've missed it.

He's back this Saturday May 23rd during the St. Charles Fine Art Show. Free to attend, 1–5PM.

This is Franklin's Tower by Tom Herzberg.

The title comes from a 1975 Grateful Dead song β€” a song about a mysterious tower where a bell hangs that can turn night into day and guide lost souls who hear it ring. A place of refuge. A place of transformation. Written by Robert Hunter, it has been described as a song that paints landscapes and timescapes where the four winds converge around a structure with almost magical properties.

Look at the painting and you'll understand exactly why that song was the inspiration.

Tom Herzberg is a Chicago-based fine artist and illustrator whose work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, the Washington Post, Pl***oy, and the Field Museum of Natural History, among thousands of other commissions over a career spanning decades. He taught illustration and watercolor at the American Academy of Art in Chicago for 16 years.

His prints and originals are in the store now. And he's painting live here on Saturday May 23rd during the St. Charles Fine Art Show. Free to attend, 1–5PM.

Do you know what this is?

Cast iron, hand turned. Made by G.W. Klages and Son, Machinists and Designers, Pittsburgh PA.

It's an industrial circle glass cutter, built to score precise glass circles for gauges, clock faces, and instrument panels.

The glass sits on the 15 inch wooden platform and rotates while the cutter scores a perfect circle.
You can still see the marks in the wood from years of use.

Then we found the other plate.

Property of Bell & Howell Co. Inventory No. GK-654.

Klages made it. Bell & Howell owned it. Used in their factory to cut precision glass for cameras and optical instruments. It came to us from an industrial gauge distributor -- the kind that deals in pressure gauges, vacuum gauges, and precision instruments.

Two American manufacturing legends. One tool. Now it's here.

And for a Chicago area store, a Chicago connection feels just right.

Come find it Saturday for Vintage Store Day.
