You can make some of the MOST expensive design mistakes in your new build before the concrete is ever poured.

Hi, I’m Chrissi, designer and co-owner here at Homestyle Collective. 👋 We help homeowners think through the details early—so their home doesn’t just look beautiful when it’s finished, it actually works for the way they live.

If you’re building, here are the **3 things I want you thinking about FIRST:**

**1. PUT THE DREAM LIST IN THE BUDGET.**

Before that first builder meeting, write down EVERYTHING you’d love to have.

Stone fireplace? Beams? Built-ins? Specialty lighting? Upgraded flooring? Custom cabinetry?

**PUT. IT. DOWN.**

You can always value-engineer later, but you can’t make an informed decision about what stays and what goes if it was never in the budget.

**2. GET THE FLOOR PLAN RIGHT BEFORE THE PRETTY STUFF.**

Before elevations. Before tile. Before paint colors.

How does your home actually FLOW?

Where do groceries come in? Where do backpacks land? Is there enough storage? Where will furniture sit? Does the kitchen work for the way your family actually lives?

A beautiful house that frustrates you every day isn’t good design.

**Function comes first.**

**3. MAKE THE EXPENSIVE-TO-CHANGE DECISIONS EARLY.**

Walls. Framing. Plumbing. Electrical. Sconces. Sink placement. Floor outlets. Architectural details.

These aren’t decisions you want to make once construction is moving.

Changing a paint color later? Easy.

Moving plumbing or changing framing? **Not so easy—and definitely not cheap.**

The more we plan during pre-construction, the fewer expensive changes you’re making in the field.

**Build it on paper first. Then build it once.**

Building a new home? **SAVE this before your first builder meeting** and always follow along for more decisions you need to make BEFORE your builder starts asking for them.

The kitchen has always felt like the heart of the home to us. It’s where everyone naturally gathers - morning coffee at the island, friends pulling up a stool while dinner is being made, kids reaching for snacks, and conversations that somehow last long after the meal is over.

That’s probably why kitchens are some of our favorite spaces to design. There’s so much more to consider than how they look. We think about how people move through the room, where everyone will gather, what needs to be within reach, and how the space can make everyday life (and hosting) feel a little easier.

In this kitchen, the warm wood, collected details, patterned tile, and generous island create a space that feels welcoming, lived-in, and ready for a full house.

Because the best kitchens aren’t just made for cooking. They’re made for gathering.

Shoot days always feel a little surreal for us. By the time we get to this point, we’ve often spent months (sometimes years) designing, planning, selecting, ordering, problem-solving, and preparing every little detail. Then, somehow, it all comes together very quickly. Install happens, the rooms take shape, and suddenly we’re standing inside the finished home we’ve been picturing for so long.

From there, we spend a few days styling, fluffing, shifting things around, and photographing every corner so we can finally capture the story of the space.

There’s something so special about seeing a project through the camera for the first time. It’s the moment when all of those individual decisions finally come together as one complete home.

We can’t wait to share the full project with y’all soon, but for now, here’s a little behind-the-scenes look at one we recently wrapped up.

As designers, some of the advice your friends and family give you about your home makes us want to scream. 😅
We know they mean well. 😂

But there’s a BIG difference between having great taste and knowing how to design a home.

So before you take your sister, best friend, neighbor or mother-in-law’s advice…here are a few we’d think twice about:

🚫 “You’ll get tired of that.”
Maybe. But you’ll probably get tired of playing it safe everywhere, too.
If you absolutely LOVE the wallpaper, the stone, the color or the statement light—there’s usually a way to use it intentionally without letting it take over the entire house.

🚫 “Every room doesn’t have to go together. Just do what you like in each one.”
Your rooms don’t need to match—but they should speak the same language. A well-designed home has a thread running through it so moving from one space to another feels intentional.

🚫 “You need something on every open space.”
You don’t. 😂 Empty space is part of the design. Sometimes the thing making a room feel “off” is simply that there’s TOO MUCH happening.

🚫 “You have kids/dogs. Don’t spend money on nice furniture.”
Having a family doesn’t mean your home has to be filled with things you don’t love. It means we choose the RIGHT materials—performance fabrics, durable finishes and pieces that can actually handle your real life.

And maybe our favorite…

🚫 “You don’t need a designer. I’ll help you!” 😂
We LOVE an enthusiastic friend.
But design isn’t just helping you decide which tile looks prettier.
It’s understanding how hundreds of individual decisions affect one another—and making sure the finished home feels intentional, functions beautifully and actually feels like you.
Your friends and family can absolutely have opinions. Just don’t let 14 different opinions design your home. 😂

Good design isn’t just about having good taste.
It’s about having a PLAN.

And that plan can save you from some… “I wish we would’ve thought about that” moments later.

When we renovate, we’re always looking for the details worth holding onto, the old millwork, an original archway, a beautiful window, the little imperfections that give a house its soul. Hi, I’m Chrissi, designer here at Homestyle, where we help homeowners **turn the little things that aren’t working into thoughtful spaces designed around the way they actually live.**

Because good design starts long before we pick a paint color, countertop, or sofa.

I want to know how you **actually live** in your home.

Where do you drop your keys when you walk in?

Where does the dog sleep—even though you swore he wasn’t getting on the furniture? 😂

Which cabinet drives you crazy every morning?

Where does everyone naturally gather?

What do you walk around, move, adjust, or complain about every single day?

These seem like tiny things. But they’re **patterns**—and those patterns tell me so much about what your home needs.

You may have gotten so used to them that you don’t even realize **there could be a better way.**

That’s one of my favorite parts of being a designer.

I’m not just asking, **“What do you want your home to look like?”**

I’m asking:

**“How do you want your home to work for the way you actually live?”**

Because a beautiful home is great.

**A beautiful home that makes your everyday life easier? That’s good design.**

So start paying attention to those little frustrations. The things you’ve worked around. The things you’ve told yourself are *fine.*
