Some wall colors speed up your heart rate. Others slow it down.

Turns out, the color on your wall might be quietly running your nervous system without your permission.

In 2016, researchers at Curtin University in Australia sat 24 students in study rooms painted six different colors and tracked their heart rate while they read. Red and yellow sped it up. Blue and green kept it steady. Color hits your brain's alarm center, the amygdala, before you even register what you're looking at, so warm hues can put your body mildly on alert without you knowing why.

That means the color behind your desk, your bed, or your couch is setting your baseline heart rate every single day, whether you're stressed about anything real or not.

Save red and orange for rooms built for energy, like a home gym or kitchen. In spaces meant for rest, choose blue, sage green, or warm sand instead, and let your nervous system finally idle.

How many tones can one room actually hold before it starts to feel busy?

In this week's style guide, the Rivado living room, the answer is three or four. Cognac carries through our Maxim Sofa w/ Chaise, then repeats in the wood ceiling and walls wrapping the whole room. The Linder Lounge Chair sits opposite in black, with the Villum Coffee Table settling low in the middle.

Texture does the rest of the work — grain running through the Alvilda Sideboard, the Sindri Bar Stool waiting at the island, and a run of vintage one-of-ones: a Betz Water Pot Table Lamp, a Chinese Water Pot, a Thorron Olive Jar. I'm holding back how it all repeats into the kitchen.
