Turn & Grain

Turn & Grain Formerly BuiltByGuy. Same maker. Same wood. Just a new name that better represents my work. Bowls • Pens • Other things Have something in mind you want built?

I like to say it all started when my wife said, "Hey, I want you to build us an awesome dining room table." - and the rest is history. I like to use reclaimed wood— sometimes pallets, baseball bats, or skateboards but also local lumber being cut down or thrown away. Everything you see on this page is Built by Guy. Contact me and let's chat.

Well the mouth was intended to be a circle! I tried to keep some of the natural edge around the opening and forgot to adjust while I hollowed, so I cut a piece away which not only made the opening wider but asymmetrical. I went to carve a little away and the piece decided to follow the natural edge a bit before holding up. Looking at it now reminds me of a yawn.

We don’t have a Rockler brick and mortar in Pinellas County so when I found out the only Woodcraft was shutting down I knew I had to drop in. Slim pickings for sure but I had a few things I wanted to find and this roughing gouge was one. I’ve somehow roughed larger pieces with a spindle gouge and feel lucky I wasn’t hurt or broke the tool so now this is a little relief.

Things mights look a little different so I wanted to tell you about it instead of it being a surprise.

I started making because my wife wanted a farmhouse table and I wasn’t ready to drop big cash on what I could do with a small investment.

This turned into a healthy collection of pallets that I incorporated into other big pieces (barn doors, buffets, built ins for our own home). And then kid #1 arrived.

I was searching for something I could do where I could pause it in a moments notice and get inside to help with the baby. Unfortunately running the table saw and doing glue ups was not looking like a long term plan anymore.

This was early COVID times so a lot of local woodworking classes were shut down and people weren’t getting out much. I was looking around online and found who happened to be a local guy. Keep in mind I am a social worker with an infant so both my time and money were held at a premium to me but I knew I wanted to start turning. I reached out via a cold call e-mail and offered to sweep his floors and clean his shop if he would teach me some wood turning basics. I’ve never asked what his response was but I’m guessing he laughed when he said “sure, come by next week.”

And that’s what I did, swept and cleaned and learned a little. Eavesdropping on other people asking questions and then back to sweeping. Eventually I picked up a lathe, slowly got rid of all the pallets and haven’t looked back since. I still see Nick pretty often, usually with kid #1 and kid #2 right beside me. I still ask questions, still need advice and still want that unfiltered opinion about my work.

My work has changed, my perspective has changed but the fun is still there. I have a lot of ideas and who knows if they’ll ever actually exist but I’ll document what I can along the way and we can see what happens together.

BuiltByGuy laid the foundation for me to grow into Turn & Grain. It is the first chapter in the story my girls will be told when I show them all this stuff I’ve made.

You can always see my projects here or check in on where I’ll have newer work coming out.

We both had the day off and when I asked her what she wanted to do I was told “let’s make something!”

So we did. Quick lessons on how to use the tools and some cuts made together led to an explosion of sawdust from inside the vessel. I’ll fine tune it later this week but she did great.

I can’t remember if I posted these or not. Here’s the first project Kid #1 helped out with and I think it’s a great start!

Took sometime today to reflect and be thankful. Thank you for the birthday thoughts and reach outs.

I enjoy making pens if I haven’t turned in a while. I figure if you’re going to spend good money on a pen then you’d better get a cool pen to show off. These are pretty fun and I don’t think I’ve seen the piston mechanic before. More to come.

Every year after Localtopia the first thing I try to do is reset the work shop. I get caught up in the grind and self-imposed pressure of making things for the market that cleaning anything is very low on the to-do list.

When I come across blanks that once had an idea attached to them or partially turned bowls that dodged my attention I put them in the shelves closest to the lathe. The theory is that when I walk in and say to myself “what am I making today?” I can look at the shelf and get started. Usually the question gets answered by something I’ve committed myself to and the shelf gets a little heavier with dust.

This year I’m going to work on making my “To Do” list into more of a “Want To Do” list. This might mean I make fewer bigger pieces but I’m hoping to enjoy my time more and think that will come through in the work.

As much as I like to post successes I think it’s important to show some failures.

I had this as the last of a 3 bowl set and stepped away to sharpen my gouge when I heard a very loud sound.

I still haven’t found the other piece yet. This goes on my wall of reminders to be as safe as I can and to not put too much pressure on myself.

While I try to use as much salvaged material as I can, sometimes I just don’t. This is dyed and laminated wood very similar is look to the inside of skateboards. These measuring cups, and door other sets, will be at Localtopia in just one short week!
