Tam Wynn — The Strategist Educator — is an innovative thinker and systems-builder with 16+ years of experience in interior design, construction, and large-scale project management. Her career spans commercial kitchens, restaurant renovations, residential design, and complex design-build projects — including a kitchen renovation for NBA player Aaron Gordon of the Denver Nuggets, as well as large-scale restoration work. Unlike traditional design educators, Tam’s teaching is rooted in execution intelligence — precision, structure, and real-world problem-solving under constraints. In an industry undergoing rapid change — shaped by AI, economic shifts, and evolving workplace dynamics — employers are hiring based on skills, not titles. The capabilities that travel across industries and borders are clear:

• Leadership
• Mentorship
• Talent development
• Communication
• Storytelling

Tam’s work bridges academia and professional practice. She trains designers to think in systems, define constraints, defend decisions, communicate trade-offs, and operate with authority in any professional room. Through the Interior Design & Construction Mastery (IDCM) framework and her Design Thesis Intensive, Tam develops designers' leadership capacity at a critical stage of their growth. She helps advanced students and emerging professionals turn portfolio projects into leadership roles — equipping them with the systems thinking, clear communication, and executional intelligence they need to work confidently in professional settings. Currently expanding her educational work into Europe, Tam is building cross-cultural bridges between academic design training and professional leadership development. Because titles change. That moody, boutique-hotel look doesn't come from paint and drapes. It comes from decisions made before the drywall goes up.

Floor-to-ceiling drapery needs blocking in the ceiling. Glowing slat-wall shelving needs power and a hidden spot for the LED driver. Charcoal walls absorb light, so your lighting plan has to work twice as hard.

Miss these at rough-in and you're cutting open finished walls.

After 16 years designing and building, here's my rule: most expensive renovation mistakes are locked in before demo day. Plan the bones right, and the styling becomes the easy part.

Inside the Renovation Planning Studio, I walk you through the exact planning steps I use on job sites, so your project looks intentional and stays on budget.

The "impossible" design that scared everyone away. Until I accepted the challenge. 🫣🛠️

A homeowner contacted me about renovating a bathroom that had three other designers and two contractors completely stumped. They all told her the same thing: "The space is just too awkward. You have to live with the layout."

I saw the space and instantly understood why they said that. Swipe to see the 'before.'

It was located right under a basement staircase, which meant a severely slanted ceiling, exposed pipes, and a highly restrictive footprint. The owners had been wanting to renovate it for a long time, but they kept getting turned down by professionals who thought it was too much of a headache.

Where others saw an impossible dead-end, I saw a fun challenge. I accepted it on the spot.

Here is the secret that separates average design from true problem-solving: you don't need a massive, six-figure budget to fix an awkward space. You just need a smart strategy. Because the budget and timeline for this project were extremely tight, we didn't rip open the walls or move the main plumbing.

Instead, we worked with the bones of the space:

Kept the Infrastructure: We reused the exact same existing water and power lines to save thousands in labor and hours of demo time.

Elevated the Finishes: We installed sleek new fixtures, a custom industrial pipe light, and a bold black hexagon tile that completely changed the energy of the room.

Maximized the Layout: We built a beautiful, seamless glass enclosure right into that awkward stair incline, turning a weird architectural bottleneck into a luxury walk-in shower.

It's just that simple. By keeping the bones but completely reimagining the materials and fixtures, we gave them a high-end, functional bathroom without the high-end price tag or months of construction. The owners were absolutely thrilled to finally have a space they love after being told "no" for so long.

The biggest takeaway here? Good design isn’t about waiting for a perfect space or a limitless budget. It’s about making an imperfect space work perfectly for you through smart planning.

Have you ever been told a home renovation idea "couldn't be done"? Tell me about your home's trickiest spaces in the comments!

The Tile Mistake That Sends People to the ER 👇
A homeowner I know fell in love with a gorgeous, glossy large-format tile and used it on her shower floor. It looked stunning in the showroom.

Then she actually showered in it. Wet feet on polished tile turned out to be dangerously slippery. Within a week, she was terrified of slipping every single time, especially with her kids using that bathroom.

Here's what most people don't know: tile has a slip-rating, called the COF (coefficient of friction). And it matters most exactly where people forget about it: the shower floor.

Look at the shower floor in this photo from one of my projects. 👇
Those small herringbone tiles aren't just for looks. All those little grout lines do something important: they give your feet grip and channel the water away. More grout lines, more traction, safer footing. That's why small mosaics are the go-to for wet areas, while big glossy tiles belong on the walls or the dry floor outside the shower.

Beautiful and functional aren't opposites. When you choose the right material for the right place, you get both: a shower that looks high-end AND keeps you safe.

So next time you're shopping for tile, slow down and check the product info, the material, the recommended use for that specific area, and the slip rating before you fall for the look.

Most homeowners decide with emotion instead of logic, and that's exactly where costly mistakes begin.

The lesson? The prettiest option isn't always the right one for every spot. Function first, looks second. Always.
