When it comes to painting surfaces, stretched canvas is often the first method that comes to mind. But traditionally, all the Old Masters painted on wood panels. What’s the best type of easel for you? If you mostly paint small to medium sizes and like to sit, a table easel or light tripod might be perfect. If you create big canvases or crave stability, a solid studio easel is worth it. And if you love painting outdoors, consider a portable field easel. The right easel is like a good friend – it should support you and stay out of your way so you can focus on making art!

Did you know that historically, artists made their own paints? Early artists had to create their colors from scratch. Prehistoric painters used natural minerals – for instance, cave art at Lascaux was painted with red and yellow ochre clays and white chalk, plus charcoal for black. In Renaissance workshops, apprentices would spend hours grinding dry pigments into powder and mixing them with a binding medium like linseed oil or egg yolk to prepare the day’s paints.
