While there isn’t a global “roti counter” tracking every single household kitchen, we can look at macro-level agricultural and food security data to see how the numbers back up this massive scale.
Research evaluating regional grain consumption patterns shows that in Pakistan alone, wheat flour contributes to 72% of the country’s daily caloric intake, with an average per capita wheat consumption of around 124 kilograms per year (USDA/FAS, 2020). When combined with India—where annual wheat consumption trends hover near 87 million metric tons (ReportLinker, 2026)—it becomes clear that hundreds of millions of people rely on wheat-based flatbreads like rotis and chapatis as their primary daily source of energy.
Furthermore, from an economic and market research perspective, traditional unleavened flatbreads (including chapatis and rotis) maintain a dominant cultural and dietary footprint, making up a significant portion of a global flatbread market volume that sits at hundreds of millions of metric tons annually (Global Insight Services, 2024; The Insight Partners, 2024). When you break down those massive tonnages into individual, daily household portions, the reality easily scales into hundreds of millions of rotis rolled every single day.
