Seven hours at the bench. Most people walk out with more than one finished piece.

Full Day Metalsmithing runs Sunday, September 13, 10am-5pm. Rings, bracelets, pendants, earrings, bolo ties. You choose what you want to make and we help you get through it, so the day shapes itself around what you are actually interested in building.

It is one full day, start to finish, no follow up sessions to schedule. That is why people who cannot commit to a multi week course tend to land here.

Bring a friend and make a day of it.

A few of you keep asking about the shirts, so here is this week's.

Never Underestimate a Girl With a Torch is from Jewelry Artist Collective, our other project. It exists because of a specific thing that happens in this studio all the time. Somebody walks in convinced the tools will be too heavy and the torch will be too much, and three hours later she is adjusting the flame without looking up.

Soft unisex cotton, printed to order in the USA.

The tool that stops you from needing a third hand, because it is one.

A third hand is a weighted base with a set of cross-locking tweezers on an arm. Cross-locking means the tweezers hold themselves shut, so you squeeze to open them and let go to grip. Set it up once and it holds your piece exactly where you need it while you bring the torch in with one hand and feed solder with the other.

One thing almost nobody gets told: if you are right handed, clamp your work on the left side of the tweezers. Otherwise your own setup blocks the joint you are trying to heat, and you will spend the whole solder fighting for an angle.

Small tool. Removes an entire category of frustration.

We keep soldering gear stocked in the tool store inside the studio. Browse here: https://bgoldenjewelryschool.com/collections/all

Cut the stone. Then build the silver that holds it. Same afternoon.

Most people learn these two crafts years apart, which means you spend a long time designing around stones somebody else cut. The Combo Class does both in one sitting. You start on the lapidary side and grind a rough stone into a finished cabochon, then move to the bench and build the setting that holds the exact stone you just made.

Combo Class runs Thursday, September 10, 3-7pm.

Same day, if casting is more your thing, Sand Casting runs that evening, 5-8pm. Pack a mold, pour molten metal, pull out something with a texture you cannot get any other way.

A cabochon is just a stone with a flat back and a domed top. That flat back is doing more work than people realize.

It is what lets the stone sit down properly in a bezel or a setting instead of rocking around on a high spot. When a setting will not close cleanly, the stone is often the reason, not the metal.

Which is the quiet argument for cutting your own. When you shape the stone yourself, you decide the dome, the edge, and the base, and you can cut it to suit the piece you actually want to make instead of designing around whatever the bin had.

Intro to Lapidary runs Monday, September 7, 6-8pm. Two hours of grinding, shaping, sanding and polishing, and you walk out with a finished cabochon. No experience needed.

Prongs look like the hard part. They are actually the honest part.

A bezel hides a lot. Prongs hide nothing. Four or six little arms hold the stone up to the light and every one of them has to sit right, which is exactly why setting your first one feels like such a win.

Simple Prong Setting runs Wednesday, September 9, 5-10pm. Five hours, and you leave with a finished piece and a skill you will use on nearly everything after this. Good next step if you have done an intro class and you are ready to start setting stones.

Spots still open. Registration closes 24 hours before.

Part western, part modern, entirely yours.

Bolo Tie runs Tuesday, September 8, 5:30-9:30pm. Four hours to build a bolo from raw metal to finished slide, including the tips and the cord. It is one of our favorite pieces to watch come together because everybody takes it somewhere different.

Some people go traditional. Some people make something you would wear to a wedding. Both work.

If you solder already and want a project with real presence, this is it.

Comment BOLO and we'll send you the link.

Carving wax is the closest thing to sculpting that jewelry gets.

A wax carver set gives you six different edges because a wax model is all about the shapes you can cut into it and the ones you can smooth back out. Fine points for detail, flat blades for planes, curved edges for hollowing.

The reason people fall for wax carving is that wax forgives. Cut too deep and you can add it back. Try that in silver and you are starting over.

Then you cast it and the thing you carved comes out in metal, holding every mark you made.

People ask what makes a good beginner. It is not steady hands.

It is the ones who are willing to be bad at something in a room full of strangers for three hours. That is the whole thing. Every single person who walks in nervous and stays nervous for the first twenty minutes ends up fine.

The ones who struggle are the ones trying to look like they already know. You cannot learn while you are performing.

So if you have been putting off booking because you think you will be the worst one there, we can tell you honestly that the worst one there always has the best time.
