B Golden Jewelry School provides jewelry classes for all ages and abilities in Salt Lake City, Utah, and Austin, Texas. Welcome to B Golden Jewelry School!

Private and group instruction is available for many facets of jewelry making. We are excited to offer jewelry-making classes for all ages and abilities in Salt Lake City, Utah. Our classes cover various aspects of jewelry making, such as metalsmithing (silversmithing), casting, cold connections, PMC, enameling, lapidary, and more. We provide group and private instruction, as well as different types of classes, including weeknight and full-day workshops, virtual and week-long classes, and specialized techniques from visiting instructors. We make it easy to book your classes on our website, so you can start your jewelry-making journey today. We can't wait to meet you in class! The hammer that moves metal without leaving a single mark on it. 🔨

A rawhide mallet is exactly what it sounds like. Rawhide packed hard, set with shellac, on an ash handle. Heavy enough to shape silver, soft enough that it won't dent or scratch the surface you're trying to keep clean.

It's what you reach for when you're truing a ring on the mandrel, flattening a sheet that's gone wavy, or closing something up without putting steel marks all over your work. A steel hammer leaves a record of every single strike. This one doesn't.

One thing nobody tells you: a brand new one needs breaking in before it earns its keep. Soaking, striking, sanding, and a bit of patience. We wrote the whole process up here:

Two completely different kinds of mess in the same building tonight. 🪨

Combo Class has the afternoon, so the lapidary side runs wet and loud while people grind rough rock down into finished cabochons. Then those same people move across to the bench and build silver around the exact stone they just cut.

Intro to Metalsmithing starts at 5:30 on the other side of the room. Torches, and the particular quiet that lands about forty minutes in once everybody has found their thing.

Stone dust on one side, silver filings on the other. Somebody always finds both in their shoes.

Inlay isn't setting a stone. It's filling a channel with one. 💎

Stone Inlay Ring runs Tuesday, November 3, 5-9pm. You cut and solder a sterling silver band, open a channel with the flex shaft, then crush your stone and pack it in so the color sits flush with the metal.

Bring a stone you love to crush, or pick one from ours. Choosing the color is most of the design, and it's the part people agonize over in the best way.

Beginner friendly. If you've used a rotary handpiece before you'll move a bit faster, but it isn't required. All tools and materials are included.

Three solders, and the order you use them in decides whether your second joint survives. 🔥

Hard, medium and easy are not quality grades. They're melting points. Hard flows hottest, easy flows coolest, and there's maybe a hundred degrees between them.

So you plan backwards. The first joint on a piece gets hard solder. The next one gets medium. Anything you add last gets easy. That way, when you heat the piece up for joint three, joints one and two stay exactly where you put them.

The classic mistake is using easy for everything because it flows so nicely. It does, right up until the whole thing quietly comes apart in your tweezers. 😅

This is the kind of thing that's much easier to learn standing at a bench than reading about it. Intro to Metalsmithing runs several times a week.

Four days in a row is what finally makes it stick. 🔥

4 Day Metalsmithing runs Monday through Thursday, November 2-5, 5-10pm. You attend all four evenings, and the booking page shows the start date only.

Twenty hours at the bench is long enough to stop following instructions and start designing your own work. Sawing, filing, soldering, stone setting, polishing, torch setup, studio safety, and the finishing work that makes a piece look professional instead of homemade. Rings, bracelets, pendants, earrings, whatever you want to build.

No experience needed. It starts from zero, and most people leave with several finished pieces plus the ability to keep working on their own.

Tools and equipment are included. Silver, stones and solder are settled up at the end.

Registration closes 24 hours out, so Sunday November 1 is the last day to book.

He wasn't talking about metalsmithing, but he may as well have been. ✨

Nobody gets good at this in a burst. You get good in twenty minute stretches, on a Tuesday, filing the back of something nobody will ever look at. The skill arrives quietly and late, and usually you only notice it when a thing that used to take an hour takes twenty minutes.

Whatever you're working on this week, the reps are the whole trick.

Every other kind of stone setting holds a stone on. Inlay puts it in. 💎

You cut a channel into the metal, crush your stone down into granules, pack the granules into the channel, then grind the whole surface back flat and polish it. No bezel, no prongs, nothing standing up off the ring.

The result sits completely flush. Run your thumb across it and you feel one continuous surface, metal and stone together, with no edge to catch on a sweater.

It's also the kindest thing you can do with a stone that cracked, or an offcut too small for anything else. Nothing gets wasted.

Stone Inlay Ring runs Tuesday, November 3, 5-9pm. You cut and solder the band as well, so you walk out with the whole ring in a stone color you picked. Experience helps but isn't required.

Four days in a row at the same bench is a different thing entirely. 🔥

4 Day Metalsmithing runs Monday to Thursday, November 2-5, 5-10pm each evening. You attend all four days, and the booking page shows the start date only. Twenty hours in total.

Here's what the extra days buy you. In a single class you learn a technique. Over four, it stops being a set of instructions and turns into something your hands just do. By day three people stop asking whether they're doing it right and start deciding what they want to make.

Rings, bracelets, pendants, earrings. Sawing, soldering, stone setting, polishing. No experience needed, and tools and equipment are included. Silver, stones and solder are extra, usually $20 to $100 or more depending on what you build, and you're welcome to bring your own.

You go home with several finished pieces and enough skill to keep working on your own.
