Hospitality design invites us to think a little differently.

Of course, the spaces need to function beautifully. But they also have the opportunity to surprise you.

A memorable experience is rarely created by one grand gesture. More often, it's the collection of thoughtful moments along the way: the lighting that feels *just* right, the material you can't help but reach out and touch, or the unexpected pop of color that makes you smile.

We saw the bathrooms at Formando Vineyards as an opportunity to do something playful. To introduce color, pattern, and personality in a way that feels unexpected, a small moment of joy tucked within the larger experience of visiting the vineyard.

I think the best spaces leave you with a feeling long after you've left them.

Sometimes, that feeling comes from the places you least expect.

Designing a home requires making hundreds of interconnected decisions.

One choice influences the next, and before long, it can feel difficult to know whether you're moving toward something cohesive or simply accumulating things you like.

Over time, the excitement of collecting inspiration starts to feel more overwhelming than inspiring. The possibilities seem endless, but moving forward somehow feels harder.

And I don't think that's because people lack creativity or good taste.

For many clients, hiring a designer allows them to feel excited about the process again because they finally understand the science behind creating a home that feels deeply personal, functions beautifully for the people living there, and feels worth coming home to every single day.

Every project leaves you with a few lessons you'll carry into the next one.

The Lakehouse was no exception.

Some were design-related, others were process-related. And if you've been in this industry long enough, you know the latter can be just as important.

If I had to summarize the biggest lesson from the Lakehouse project in one phrase, it would be:

🤌 Clarity beats assumptions.

Whether it's custom tile orders, exterior paint selections, or coordinating trades, the projects that run most smoothly are the ones where details are confirmed, communicated, and reviewed one more time than you think is necessary.

Even after years in this business, every project teaches me something. And I don't think that will ever end.That's part of what keeps the work interesting.

You refine, adapt, and take those lessons forward into the next project.

I spend a lot of time talking about projects, design decisions, materials, construction details, and all the things that go into creating a home.

But occasionally it's fun to remember that there is, in fact, a person behind the floor plans.

Being a designer means collecting a veryyyyy specific set of observations that never seem to leave your brain.

Like how a room can feel completely different after moving a single piece of furniture.

Or how dogs somehow have an uncanny ability to identify the best seat, the warmest patch of sunlight, or the coziest corner within seconds of entering a home.

Or how kitchens call people in to gather, celebrate, decompress, have difficult conversations...and have you noticed how everyone ends up standing, even when there's a perfectly good chair right there 🤣

I think that's one of the reasons I love design so much. The longer you do it, the less it becomes about the objects and the more it becomes about understanding how people live.

Brings warmth and energy. It's the color that keeps the palette from feeling too serious, adding richness and personality without overwhelming the space.

And over time, you just keep collecting more thoughts like these 🤣

The longer you're a designer, the more your brain becomes a running database of dimensions, materials, proportions, and oddly specific observations that nobody asked for.

As we've approached the 250th anniversary of American independence, I've found myself reflecting on what it means to be part of a story much larger than ourselves.

This photo feels especially meaningful to me.

The flag. The old farmhouse. The generations of history held within these walls.

It's a reminder that so much of what we enjoy today was built through the sacrifice, perseverance, compassion, and determination of those who came before us.

I feel an immense sense of gratitude for the freedoms we often take for granted: the ability to build a life, pursue meaningful work, gather with family, express ourselves freely, and create homes that reflect who we are.

Perhaps that's one of the reasons I care so deeply about preserving places with history and character. They remind us that every generation leaves something behind for the next.

Today, I'm feeling especially proud to be an American and thankful for those whose courage and conviction made that privilege possible.

Happy Independence Day, and enjoy this weekend with those you hold most dear! 🇺🇸
