Kickin' Ash BBQ - Bulverde

Kickin' Ash BBQ - Bulverde We’re Tracy and Jimmy Spruill, a BBQ competition team. Our journey started in 2020 at local Bulverde cook-offs.

After taking LCBBQ’s class in May 2024, we were inspired to dive into competitive cooking and haven’t looked back.

I don’t talk about it much, and most people would never know by looking at me, but I have a lot going on medically. I deal with chronic pain and multiple health issues every single day. Some days are harder than others, but I keep smiling, showing up, and pushing through.

Today, we decided to invest in hope and healing. I received stem cell treatments in both of my knees and my neck, along with an IV infusion designed to help support my autoimmune and organ issues. What amazed me most was that everything was contained in just two small vials. It’s incredible to think that something so small can hold so much hope—hope for less pain, better health, renewed strength, and a better quality of life.

I know this isn’t an overnight fix, and I don’t know exactly what the outcome will be, but I do know this — Today feels like the beginning of a new chapter. I’m praying these two little vials are the start of a whole new life, one with more good days than bad and the ability to truly live instead of simply getting by.

If anyone is curious about stem cell treatments, feel free to reach out. I may not notice results for several months, healing takes time. But even now, as I sit here typing this, it’s amazing to think that my body has already begun the process of repairing and rebuilding itself. It’s pretty incredible, and I’m hopeful for what lies ahead. Here’s to hope, healing, and new beginnings.

PS A special thank you to the selfless mom who chose to donate her umbilical cord. Your incredible gift has given me something priceless.

13th overall out of 45 teams

We did good, happy with this especially it wasn't our best cook. We had some issues with some meats but ended up 13th! That's a win.

Chicken 22nd
Ribs 10th
Pork 6th
Brisket 20th
Cooks choice for me - 9th
Cooks choice for Braden - 11th
Bartender's Choice - last place!!!! Hahaha! It was bad. It was terrible, not gonna lie. 🤣

Congrats to Bearfoot Cookers, we are so happy for you!!! Also huge congrats to the Nate, all the way from Australia, on his RGC!!

Brenda Waters and Will, as always, thank you for judging going smoothly!! Gabe Medina and Shawna Tillotson, what an amazing event! Top notch!!!

Here we goooooo again! 🧑‍🍳 👩‍🍳 We’re in the quaint little town of Lockhart this weekend, and being close to home is a nice change of pace. After this cook, we’ll be taking a little break until the Fourth of July 🇺🇸 🧨 —time to tackle a few projects around the house, spend time with family, and honor my dad as we approach one year since we lost him.

Lockhart is proudly known as the Barbecue Capital of Texas, making this a special place to compete. This event was originally started years ago by Gabe Medina’s father. Over time, the cook-off faded away, but Gabe Medina and Shawna Tillotson have worked hard to bring it back and breathe new life into a great tradition. We’re excited to be here and be part of its return! 🔥🥩🏆

They pulled this event together in just three weeks, and the response has been incredible. Forty-six teams showed up, fired up their pits, and are ready to battle it out for the win. That’s a testament to the hard work of the organizers and the respect we have for them in the BBQ community. 🔥🏆

Even better, this event supports a great causes. Proceeds benefit Caldwell County's senior class and helps provide scholarships for the Class of 2027 as they pursue higher education. It’s always special when great barbecue brings a community together while making a positive impact for future generations. ❤️🔥🎓👵👴

Got our three Vinson Drum Smokers officially working together today. These are some good drums.

We started Friday night off right with 2 cooks choice entries and a bartender's choice.

🌮 Braden decided to do something a little different and whipped up some steak tacos with a homemade chipotle sauce. Man, they were good! I have a feeling these are going to become a regular request around our house.

🎂 Cook’s Choice for Kickin’ Ash was my cheesecake. I’m really looking for feedback and seeing how it continues to score. I turned in a beautiful little cheesecake and was incredibly happy with how it looked and tasted.

🥤🍹🍷 Bartender’s Choice—well, I turned in a drink. I’m not exactly sure what I’d call it, but let’s just say it was some happy juice and I'd enjoy it on the 🏖️ beach. 😂 Cheers! 🍻🔥

🐔 Chicken is running smoothly, we’re on schedule, and everything seems to be falling into place. Honestly, it almost feels like we’re forgetting something because we’ve actually had a little downtime today! 😂 But for now, we’ll take it as a win, enjoy the slower pace, and keep rolling. 🔥🍗🏆 Sure happy with our chicken - yum.

🐖 Ribs — I say it every week (😂), but I just don’t understand why these beauties aren’t landing in the Top 10 more often. So, I picked the brain of a fellow cook, and his verdict was simple: we’re not cooking them quite long enough. He shared a pro tip with us, so we’re giving it a shot and will see how it works out in Edinburg. For now, we’re hoping these judges appreciate them KCBS-style! 🤣🤞

🐷 Pork — This box is a bit of a mess, not gonna lie. The money muscles were all different shapes and sizes, and we should’ve slowed down and reevaluated the situation before building the box. We were rushing and trying to make the best of what we had. The pork was probably a touch overcooked because those monies wanted to fall apart on us, leaving us with a lot of chunks instead of nice slices. But that’s BBQ sometimes—you work with what the meat gives you and send it with a prayer! 🤣 🙏🏼

🐮 Brisket – We decided to put burnt ends in the box because they were absolute butter! Tender, juicy, and packed with flavor. The slices came out pretty darn good too. I over sauced a bit as I was putting the slices in the box, so hopefully the judges like our BBQ sauce! 😂 We were really happy with how this brisket turned out. It cooked beautifully, looked great in the box, and was one of those briskets that makes all the long hours worth it. Now we just wait and see what the judges think! 🤞🔥🥩

What a weekend! Smoke in the Mountains BBQ & Ribeye Shootout is hands down one of our favorite cook-offs of the year. Jennifer Probst-Webster and her crew put on an amazing event that runs like clockwork. The entire community comes out to support it, there are bands, activities for everyone, and best of all, the kids get to run around and just be kids. We had an absolute blast and are already looking forward to next year.

A huge shoutout to Brenda Waters and Will for running a top-notch judging process making awards a great time. We definitely missed hearing Brenda on the mic, though!

Congratulations to Too Sauced Birdies on an EPIC Grand Champion finish! Winning this cook-off is something special. Also, congrats to Tiny E BBQ on Reserve Grand Champion!

We had a great weekend ourselves, finishing 7th Overall out of 59 teams and 6th Overall-Overall (combined meats and jackpot categories).

🐔 Chicken – 9th
🐖 Ribs – 18th - just don't get it
🐮 Brisket – 4th
🐐 Cabrito – 4th
🍮 Dessert – 1st 🏆
💃 Salsa – 40th (ugh... my "Jaime" needs to make this, not me 😂)
🍹 Margarita – 18th
🥩 Steak – 33rd 🤷

Another great weekend doing what we love with some of the best people around. See y'all down the road! Up next for us ... Lockhart!

Well, it’s official — we’ve retired Thunderstruck and have a brand-new walk-up song: “Kickin’ Ash”! 🎵

A good friend of ours, actually wrote a song just for us, and we couldn’t be more grateful. He emailed it over and said, “Thought you guys needed a theme song!” The funny thing is, he had no idea that we use songs during our awards ceremonies!

The moment we heard it, we knew it was special. We loved it so much that we had to get it on Spotify and make it our official walk-up song. What an incredible and thoughtful gesture. We absolutely love it and are beyond thankful! 🔥🎶🤘
