Whoa…

Imagine living in a world where music is not only heard but also seen. Where words have flavors, and colors have a smell. That is a reality for some people with the rare neurological condition synesthesia, and some artists are using it to expand their creative limits. Michelle San Miguel of Rhode Is...

itle: “Emigrants Crossing the Plains"”

Cartographer/Artist: F.O.C. Darley (Engraved by Francis Hall)

Date and Place: 1874; New York.

Publisher: D. Appleton & Co.

Reference: Picturesque America

Dimensions & Type: 6 x 9 on a 8 x 11 sheet; BW steel plate engraving

Condition: VG+; Very nice example

Description: Taken from the "Picturesque America " series (Issued both as a 2 Volume set and as weekly subscriptions.) Edited by William Cullen Bryant, this series was one of the earliest to give Americans an arm-chair view of the country, now stretching coast to coast.

One of the most stunning and iconic engravings from the series, there a bit of everything in this view. Note the couple in the upper left pointing westward while in the foreground a dog laps water from a stream and behind the main characters, the wagon train stretches' out of sight. Given the realities of westward emigration, this is probably a bit overdrawn, but still it is very dramatic. In a small way, the image foreshadows Thomas Hart Benton (my opinion only) $35
