There’s a version of hosting that means everyone has a seat at the table, literally. This dining area was designed to stretch when it needs to (extendable table, hello big holiday dinner) and stay cozy when it’s just us on a random Monday. The art on these ledges tells our actual story — a roller coaster print from one of our first dates, an Alfred Hitchcock print because my husband will talk your ear off about Psycho if you let him, photos and postcards layered in like a scrapbook nobody asked us to make but we made anyway. The leather chairs were a non-negotiable once we had a toddler in the house — you can sink into them for a three hour dinner party AND wipe them clean the next morning, which is the kind of design detail nobody tells you that you need until you need it 😅 the rug adds all the warmth a nook like this needs, stains and all — truly, who cares, it’s a rug, it’s meant to live a little. And the chandelier is on a dimmer, because the best dinner parties are the ones that quietly go from bright and lively to low and lingering without anyone having to get up 🕯️ Design a room that holds your real life, not just your highlight reel.

Confession: I’m a wallpaper pusher 🙋‍♀️ I will find a reason to put it somewhere in every project, because it gives a space personality and wraps you in a warm hug the second you walk in. Case in point: this SF garage. And I mean GARAGE garage — dusty concrete, dark with racks, a rogue basketball situation 🏀 — that we transformed into a media room, office and full bath, all while somehow keeping half the actual garage intact (we needed somewhere to keep the surfboards to the Christmas decor!) My favorite design move in the whole space? Wallpapering the BACK of the built-in shelving instead of the walls. It’s a cost-effective way to get a huge punch of personality without ordering a lot of paper, and it makes the custom built-in wall a statement feature. Sometimes the smallest design decisions make the biggest impact 💙 ”

What a July. So much incredible work in progress right now — while also wrapping a photoshoot, a final styling install that came together just as we’d hoped, and working with collaborative and kind clients who make this job a joy (the ones who trust the process, even when a hiccup pops up along the way — thank you for that). And in between it all, our annual summer trip to the lake house in Minnesota to see my folks, soak up the lake air, and soak in this baby of mine before she turns one 🥹 Designing homes people love will always be the work — but making memories with the people I love is the whole point. Here’s to a summer full of both 💛

While I wait (impatiently 👀) for this client’s new family room sectional to arrive, I’m taking a little trip down memory lane to the kitchen remodel and living/dining room soft furnishings install we completed last year in Kentfield 🏡✨ The design decisions I swear by time and time again? Natural stone (it has my whole heart 🤍), texture layered in everywhere it can go (hi, gorgeous handmade Etsy wall hanging 👋), mixing materials with confidence (that woven-meets-upholstered dining chair combo? chef’s kiss), picking a color that makes you genuinely happy and just going for it (team handsome blue sofa all the way) and swoooon-worthy handmade tile that stops you in your tracks. It really is all in the details 💫

Every single label on this photo? That was a decision 🖤 Not a vibe, not a “we’ll figure it out” — an actual choice, usually made after two or three other options got vetoed. The wallpaper pattern scale so it wouldn’t fight the wall width. Where exactly that faucet sits so it clears the soap dish, doesn’t splash out, but doesn’t look off. The sink slab cut location and edge detail (yes, we debated about the edge). Even the toilet paper holder placement got real estate on this graphic, because it’s not “just a bathroom” when you’re the one standing in it every day. This is the part nobody asks about at a dinner party but it’s the entire job — a hundred small yeses and nos that add up to a room that just works the second you walk in.

Okay real talk 🙋 — every house has two totally different jobs happening at the front door. There’s the entryway everyone pins on Pinterest (oh hello gorgeous console) and then there’s the actual daily reality of leashes, mail, backpacks, and the mystery pile of shizzz that multiplies overnight like little gremlins 😅. This softly sculpted credenza in our Menlo Park project was designed to pull double duty — because yes, it’s a total moment (especially with that hand-beaded statement art piece, be still my heart 🤎) but crack open those doors and it gives way to function: shoes corralled, mail sorted, chaos contained. The secret to an entry that actually works isn’t choosing joy OR order, it’s designing the space smart enough to hide the mess so the joy has room to breathe ✨. Sometimes the most beautiful thing in the room is also the thing quietly doing all the heavy lifting.

Sight lines are the quiet MVP of good design — the moment you walk in the front door and your eye gets to travel clean through the house, room to room, out to whatever view deserves the spotlight ✨ It’s the difference between a house that feels chopped up and one that feels like it’s breathing. We think about it in every single floor plan: what do you see first, what pulls you forward, what do you want to catch out of the corner of your eye while you’re pouring coffee ☕️ And speaking of things worth looking at… I’m signing off for a bit to go stare at an actual sight line — the one from my family’s dock out over a Midwest lake 🚤 Nothing but water, sky, and a whole lot of cousins. As for the room — we kept the white bedding and grey walls exactly as they were, and let warmth do the rest of the talking. A textured terracotta lamp, curved wood nightstands, and the softest ecru upholstered bed brought in the coziness this primary needed ✨ ”
