I can’t believe my baby girl is 20. It has been so fun (and sometimes terrifying) to be your mom. You are fearless in everything from physical challenges to fashion choices. And I challenge anyone to find me a more entertaining person on the planet. Keep doing you, Roo. You are doing it so well. Love you beyond words 💕.

When I think back on my 20 years of being lucky enough to know Dave Dawson, the word “yes” immediately comes to mind. He said “yes” to living life to the fullest and to dreaming big and believing in people. He said “yes” to building community and supporting his friends. I was lucky enough to be on the receiving end of so many resounding “yeses” that changed my life and others.

He said “yes” to me in 2011 in San Francisco when I threw him and Michael in the backseat of my Volvo in between car seats and showed him the first Elle Decor showhouse that I knew he just “had” to sponsor. An unlimited amount of fixtures were immediately available to every designer. In 2022, when I asked him to start hosting major designers and events to benefit Charleston’s beloved Spoleto festival, he said “hells yes” and blew my mind with the ensuing events. He has even said “yes” to employing every kid in our family. (Well, that might have been Tommy, but still…) If you texted and said, “Can you talk”, he did not even say “yes,” he just picked up the phone. There was no-one like him.

To Jen and the boys, I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart. Thank you for sharing him with all of us so generously. While our insatiable appetite for his company, counsel, and friendship was understandable, I am sure it came with some sacrifices. We are all so grateful. And if you ever need anything from this community of fans and friends, I can promise you the answer will be a loud and resounding “yes.”

November was a blur…Newport, New York, New Jersey x2, Charleston and a few installs thrown in for good measure. Some of us (Lewis) are rolling into December on two wheels…

I am literally crazy for details. All of them. I love sourcing every last vintage box, antler, antique door pull for curtain tie backs, custom trim, squirrel majolica plate 🐿️, sweet embroidered cocktail napkins, adding the perfect robins egg pop to a pink tweed chair, collecting antique candlesticks, trimming each sconce shade just so or even picking the bluest candlesticks to complement an olive lacquer table. This is where the magic happens and where my joy is found 💫.

I am grateful for so much outside of my work life, but today I am feeling very grateful for this career that I have been lucky enough to enjoy for 23 years. I love working with all of the incredible artisans and vendors that see every last tape trim on to perfection or trouble shoot the myriad of snafus that are inevitable in this business to get projects across the finish line. There are so many unsung heroes in this line of work and while we, as the Insta-facing designers get all of the credit, we are literally nothing without them.

Same goes for our employees. I don’t even like that term tbh as they feel more like partners who help carry the creative, emotional and logistical burden of making a house (or pile of dirt) a home and they keep me laughing and feeling supported along the way. Design is the ultimate team sport and I am so thankful to have the best of the best in my team.

I also feel incredibly fortunate to have gained the trust of my amazing clients and am constantly in awe that they actually listen to me.

And finally, my Insta-friends. I have a bit of a love/hate with all social media and often struggle to make sense of this relatively new mandate for designers’ success. That said, I am truly grateful for all who chose to follow along, notice the details we sweat over, drop a nice line or even ask a question to show I am not just here talking to myself. Thank you. I hope you all have a very Happy Thanksgiving!
