A writing desk is a lovely feature in a guest room where travelers can lay out their things, apply makeup, work at a laptop, or even... write a letter! This writing desk is in the niche of a guest bedroom at our project, and we paired it with one of my favorite chairs - the Hauge Chair from . This chair is a super versatile chair that can be configured in dozens of ways. In this room we used the armless swivel version with an upholstered seat shell and formed white oak legs. The clean lines and natural materials of the chair and desk sit quietly in this niche, highlighted by an accent wall covered with decorative paper.

A special part of this Chair Story is the intentionality of combining elegant design with sustainable principles. These counter stools are part of a collection by Fyrn (), a company that focuses on mass producing chairs using exquisitely designed, high quality, interchangeable parts. The design centers around Fyrn’s patented ‘Stemn’ fastening system that allows the materials to be mixed, enables interchangeable leg heights and seat styles, and means that products can be shipped broken down for more economical use of resources.

In our client’s home, the black counter-height stools look sleek against the white oak cabinetry. With a tight footprint, they are not overpowering and they are lightweight, making them easy to get in and out of. The chair back and footrests elevate comfort.

I was delighted that California Home + Design () recently featured this project on their website! Click the link in bio to read ‘Hidden in Plain Sight’ by Abigail Stone.

There are a few touches that I think elevate the hospitality experience when hosting overnight guests: memorable artwork (this one by ), a bedside reading lamp, fresh flowers on the nightstand, a cozy throw blanket, and black-out window treatments. This room checks all of those boxes, plus we painted the ceiling blue for a little surprise!

You know that feeling when you meet someone and feel an immediate connection? Well, that can happen with chairs too, as was the case when I brought my clients to a showroom to test-sit a few pieces. Several months later, after a long construction phase, the furniture was delivered, and once again, my client went straight to her chair. We placed a pair of them in front of a picture window so they could swivel towards the view, the room, or the fireplace.

Our clients are currently using this space as a media room, but thanks to careful planning by it technically counts as a junior ADU, since it has its own entrance, kitchenette, and a full bathroom. For now, it's a place to entertain and binge watch shows. Above the sectional is a stunning painting by in a spectrum of cheerful summery colors.

I've been obsessed with the way artist Isabella Despujols combines embroidery, color, and geometry in her work, so I was very excited to include one of her pieces on a prominent wall of this dining room.

In our recent project, we pulled back a lot of layers, finessed the flow and developed a color and material palette that would harmonize with the home's quintessential California setting. The pale greens of the tile backsplash in the kitchen evoke the dew-misted greens of a Bay Area morning.

A picture can be worth a thousand words, but the photo of this built-in bench doesn’t tell the full story of the brilliance of this mudroom/ pantry/ baking center/ coffee bar/ all-around workhorse of a space. Whether you are coming or going to the garden, or getting home from the workday, this little bench offers a sweet place to transition. A few cubbies, some coat hooks, and a place to drop a bag (or a basket of melons!), makes a world of difference in getting organized for the next thing.

My take on this chair, in this room, is that it is the unassuming power chair. It has the quiet confidence of knowing that it will attract whoever pays attention to all that it has to offer: The seat by the window and the fireplace. Tucked into a corner that feels private but offers a view of all of the household comings and goings. Easy access to a wall of books and memorabilia. Playful details of lime green piping and an oversized button on the coordinated ottoman where you can put your feet up at the end of the day.

This hand-forged iron chair originated in Spain in the 1780s, and although I love to imagine its various lives before it arrived in San Francisco, I really only know a fraction of the story. From Spain, the set of 2 chairs somehow made their way to England, which is where they were acquired by my client’s father. The set was later inherited by my clients and upholstered in a sweet eyelet cotton fabric, which made an interesting contrast against the rough hand-forged iron frames. When it was time for a refresh, we decided to keep the casual vibe, and streamline the look using faux leather.
