“Sailing Takes Me Away”
This portrait is about my dear friend Chris who grew up in the Virgin Islands and loves to sail and be outdoors. This piece is a tribute to him and a friendship that I will forever cherish.

The sails are made with linen and backed with leather so I could sculpt it into a windblown shape. I marbled the leather to look like a sunset reflecting off of the waves and ripples.

He acquired the piece and it now sits in his home in outer sunset whose views look out at the ocean.

I’ve carried Kaj’s work for over a year now. His eye for depth and texture are what draw me to his work and the nearly zero involvement of digital steps to bring these pieces to life.

This series was all shot with his grandfather’s 1951 medium format Voigtlander Perkeo I, on 120 mm Kodak Portra 400 film. The scenes are all taken at Ocean Beach in SF and the neon glows were created with the method of double exposure on film in his home closet and using his bike taillight.

Developed, scanned, and printed at in SF.

This is an abstract portrait of my dear friend Lisa, who asked me to create a custom piece for her with the colors incorporated in this artwork. Using that idea as a base, I layered the colors to loosely mimic a sunset. When I am with her, it feels like the warmth of a summer sunset.
