Designs By Siri/My Name Is Siri https://youtu.be/0hz2wtLhLEo At first glance, one would not know that Siri has a disability. She is a well-dressed young woman with a mild disposition.

When you start talking to her, you would realize that her speech is very limited, she becomes very anxious and repeats what you say. Siri, as she is fondly called by her family and friends, was diagnosed with autism when she was three. She went through special education classes and the school system, eventually graduating from Wings Learning Center at the age of 22. There have been several ups and

downs during her school life, especially during middle school. Although Siri is intelligent and can read and write at a 3rd grade level, her limited communication skills created frustration and angry outbursts. Physically, Siri is fit and has excellent fine motor skills. She likes to be productive and helpful. She has a lot of patience in completing a task. Her mother knew that Siri was good at arranging and matching things, as she incidentally discovered her talent of making jewelry. Siri quickly mastered many of the fine skills needed to make jewelry. Her work ethic and a desire to impress people, have helped Siri hone her skills. She loves to work (although not every day) and can sit for hours, engaged in it. Jewelry making has had a therapeutic and a calming effect on her and boosted her self-confidence. She is very proud of her work and thrives in the accolades she receives at various events, where she gets to display and sell her jewelry. Siri's family hopes to help develop her skills and expand her work, so that many others with disabilities could be employed by her enterprise. She continues to inspire others with and without disabilities to become productive members of the society. She lives with her parents and 2 brothers in San Francisco Bay Area. Last two days Siri slept almost all day and night. This morning we were not sure if she would be able to go to church and when we asked she said yes 🙌🏽👍🏽👊🏽.

Makes me happy when I see Siri having the energy she needs to get on with her normal routine.

Did you ever play this game and got frustrated as the ball doesn’t hit the spot you are aiming at? You put in so much effort and know exactly where to hit, you have the strength and motivation to get those cans down yet you can’t seem to hit the spot?

This is how *Apraxia is for individuals on the spectrum of Autism. Siri’s 99% challenges come from having this condition in addition of being non-speaking and autistic. Regular and vigorous workouts help her to stay regulated.

Whenever I play this game, I always get frustrated and throw the balls without aiming because I know that I cannot hit them no matter how hard I try.

In life, Siri doesn’t give up on any opportunity given but keeps pushing harder. Finals were tough, not because she doesn’t know the material but her body wasn’t cooperating. We took several walks around the parking lot and also breaks yet it was challenging for Siri. Finally, she completed her final exam yesterday and now she is enjoying her break. Brain work gets her more tired than physical work. She is sleeping continuously but she is expected to wake up to eat and shower.

*Apraxia is a brain and nervous system disorder that makes it hard to perform purposeful or learned movements, despite having the desire and physical ability to do so.

I hope some day there will be some relief for individuals like my child but until then we choose to do our best, the best way we know how. 👊🏽💪🏽👏🏽
