Our ‘Flyline’ for the LAGI-BurningMan Fly Ranch competition entry has just been selected and shortlisted from a pool of several hundred international Design teams!

Our Flyline is a new and fully sustainable, off-grid energy-generating boardwalk, which includes a bathhouse, a biology monitoring observatory, and a Pavilion plinth for temporal future event structures.

This next generation boardwalk is delicately situated in a ‘Dark Sky Zone’ to traverse an environmentally sensitive, geothermally-rich high desert wetland on Northern Paiute (Numu) land.

We are looking forward to working with the other winning teams in Mid-June, to coordinate and collaborate on the big vision on this sacred land!

At the centerpoint of origin for the Flyline sits this other-worldly geothermal anomaly - the Fly Geyser.

It’s an honor to be in great company with exceptional team members: Danielle Siembieda, John Sarter, Eckhart Beatty, Rajarshi Banerjee, and Victor Etienne.

Your questions or comments are greatly appreciated! More soon... stay tuned!!

MOTO MMXX displays 20 custom motorcycles that epitomize and represent the best contemporary examples of cutting-edge custom motorcycle Craft and Design.

‘MOTO MMXX’ was designed by my design consultancy - Randolph Designs, for San Francisco Museum Of Craft And Design.

Congratulations to MCD’s enlightened Co-Founder and Executive Director JoAnn Edwards! And huge shout outs are also due to my absolutely essential and supremely talented protégé Paul Harbison, to our Guest Curator (and passionate gear head) Hugo Eccles, to MCD’s meticulous (unsung) Assistant Curator Ariel Zaccheo … and to the entire MCD Staff for their great commitment to excellence and stellar effort during these challenging times!

Even though San Francisco Museum Of Craft And Design’s galleries are currently closed due to COVID restrictions, I do encourage you to enjoy a virtual 3D walkthrough of this amazing blockbuster exhibition … [When on this site, simply scroll down to: ’Virtual 360º viewing of MOTO MMXX’]

August 22, 2020–January 3, 2021 The custom motorcycle scene has exploded over the past decade, transitioning from a fringe pursuit into a mainstream phenomenon. MOTO MMXX will display custom motorcycles that epitomize and represent the best contemporary examples of this resurgence. Featuring motor...

As a part of MCD's Visible Transparency Project, San Francisco's own Museum Of Craft And Design sat down (virtually) with MCD Assistant Curator Ariel Zaccheo and Exhibition Designer John Randolph for a conversation about their design processes, what it’s like to plan an exhibition from afar, and what new modes of display might be on the horizon, post-COVID.

The Museum of Craft and Design's Education Director Charlotte Jones speaks with MCD's Assistant Curator Ariel Zaccheo and MCD's Exhibition Designer John Rand...

Aesop NW 23rd Avenue, Portland / John Randolph
Materials: maritime canvas, quilted maritime canvas

The Northwest district of Portland, also known as Nob Hill, is built around a cluster of Victorian houses that now play host to one of the city’s most prominent retail destinations – a charming precinct that embodies the laid-back charm of this West Coast city. Aesop’s inaugural Portland space is located in a historic building on one of Nob Hill’s major thoroughfares, NW 23rd street. It shares a designer – John Randolph – with a second Portland store; when viewed together the two form a chiaroscuro effect, with each the negative image of the other. On NW 23rd street, a predominantly white palette and the use of light structures, usually seen in semi-permanent contexts, lend the space an ephemeral feel, anchored by the intricate construction techniques and the durability of industrial materials and objects. Part general store, part apothecary, the interior embodies a deep understanding of the Portland’s heritage and port location. Its recent renaissance as an artisanal mecca is also represented, via Randolph’s characteristic fusion of art and architecture.

Nice coverage in Dezeen!

The Laylow Hotel and signature Hideout Bar and Restaurant is Project that my San Francisco-based Design studio, 'Randolph Designs' co-designed over fourteen months in 02016-17. Randolph Designs was summoned by the distinguished Portland-based branding and creative agency 'Official Manufacturing Company' [a.k.a. OMFGCO], to collaborate on the Environmental Design of the Laylow's 251 Guest rooms, all public Lobby and Lanai spaces, and the Hideout Bar & Restaurant's food and beverage environments.

Design agency OMFGCO has overhauled and restored a hotel in Waikiki, drawing inspiration from Hawaiian mid-century modernism to create a lush getaway.
