[Financial Times]: Who are the tastemakers now?

Few influencers have the same cultural gravitas as the late American heiress Bunny Mellon. By Jo Ellison, May 9, 2026

'Mellon’s aesthetic was all about discretion: how things should not “be noticed”; not be too pristine. But in spite of her genteel and quiet persuasions, she was capable of epic profligacy (her grandson estimated her lifestyle cost about $20mn a year). The couturier Cristóbal Balenciaga kept a separate atelier solely to service her personal wardrobe and Mellon retained a private plane for use at any given moment, to fly in her handbag (which contained her lipstick and suntan lotion), and such like, as she moved from house to house. She spent millions of dollars creating a rustic idyll for her daughter Eliza’s coming-out party, employing staff to paint a moss effect on pebbles to make the landscape look more “real”.'

Faye Dunaway’s Manhattan apartment at the El Dorado, 300 Central Park West, c. 1970: a horizontal slice through the tower with views east to Central Park, south to Midtown, and west to the Palisades. The space combines two units on the 20th floor and was redesigned by architect Charles Gwathmey, who treated it as an experiment in living on a single continuous plane—black slate floors, widened window openings, and built‑in elements that define rooms without breaking the volume.

The master suite picks up those ideas in miniature: a floating bed with storage and shelving built into the headboard, and a tiled bathroom where the tub and chaise become part of a single flowing surface. It’s a fully worked‑through interior, but the palette stays stripped back—dark stone, white walls, and simple cabinetry—so that light and views do most of the decorating.

The apartment was photographed in the 1970s and later featured in Architectural Digest (often cited in later posts as a late‑’70s story with photographs by Derry Moore), and it’s now one of the better‑known examples of Gwathmey’s residential work in New York. We first saw these images via a recent post by on Threads and couldn’t resist tracing them back to their architectural origins.
