Conceived as a memorial to Diane Middlebrook, the provides a space for quiet contemplation without distractions. A cluster of four separate one-room studios is arranged beneath a free-standing steel canopy that supports a solar panel array and a pedestrian pathway connecting the four buildings.

Located within 582 acres of rolling hills, forests, and meadows, the siting takes advantage of unobstructed views of the Pacific coast and the coastal ridgeline. Large doors and windows face southwest to maximize passive solar gain, while the canopy tilts in the same direction to optimize the solar array.

FSC-certified clear cedar boards wrap the walls and roof, laid out to follow the unique slopes and angles of the roof and wall planes.

Built in Seadrift on the Stinson Lagoon, this 2,100-square-foot weekend residence is designed to be modern and refined, yet casual, made for a family life of swimming, paddling, cooking, and gathering. Inside, the living room, kitchen, and dining share a single main volume with high wood ceilings, where strategic skylights cast patterned light to balance the south and north exposures. Coastal codes lift the house above the waterline, creating a dual orientation: decks and steps cascade to the lagoon on one side, while the opposite edge offers a broader, sun-facing openness, allowing the main spaces to open for maximum indoor-outdoor living.

With news of the Tin Building's closure, CCS reflects on an ambitious project that helped re-anchor a historic edge of the city. The restored Fulton Street Fish Market building returned to public life as a new food epicenter for the city.

It was a privilege to collaborate with an impressive team defined by rigor and imagination: @, the team, , and , alongside countless craftspeople who made the project possible. The result balanced the building’s industrial memory with a contemporary hospitality world: old and new held in deliberate counterpoint.

It will be missed.

Set within a building with historic details at the South Street Seaport, the original 1,100-square-foot boutique for was designed to feel less like a store and more like a downtown townhouse, part living room, part dream closet. An eclectic mix of vintage and new furnishings softens the layout, while custom white oak millwork and calm display cases line the perimeter in quiet order. The palette is intentionally restrained so the collection’s saturated colors can stand out, making the merchandise the room’s brightest features.

A new waterfront restaurant is taking shape at China Basin.

In collaboration with Hi Neighbor Hospitality Group, Cass Calder Smith is designing a new waterfront restaurant at 185 Berry St. in Mission Bay, directly across from Oracle Park, with completion expected this fall. The 4,400-square-foot space will occupy part of a historic building on Mission Creek and offer expansive indoor and outdoor spaces, along with a bar and café. The design reflects its Mission Bay setting, with floor-to-ceiling retractable windows to maximize bay views, a lounge, and reservable fire pits. Inside, warm, tactile materials and sculptural wood detailing complete the space.

We look forward to this addition contributing to the ongoing evolution of San Francisco’s waterfront.

This 3,200-square-foot residence was designed for “Summering” in the Hamptons and occasional off-season weekends, serving as a family retreat to enjoy the natural beauty of the setting and to entertain. Casual modernism defines the architecture with clean lines, while strong indoor-outdoor connections draw daily life toward the deck, pool, and yard. A breezeway connects the parking side of the house with the living area, offering a directed view across the open site.

Set on a stone terrace with generous views of the cenote and mangroves, the all-day dining pavilion at Cocina Milagro Mayakoba opens to the outdoors on all sides, with glass doors and full-height windows that allow the façades to dissolve in mild weather. Deep eaves temper the Yucatán sun, extending the room into an outdoor loggia where shade and breeze become part of the meal. Inside, a turquoise ceiling references sky and water, suspended above exposed wood beams, ceiling fans, and large hanging lights. Materials include a combination of local stone, wood, locally crafted concrete tiles, and glass.

At the Dune House in , long skylights trace the living room and kitchen, washing the interiors with Northern California natural light, while expansive sliding doors dissolve the boundary to the lagoon and decks. The result is a see-through, breezy great room that links daily life to sky, sand, and water; indoors and out, all at once.

Barbuto at .bklynbridge brings Jonathan Waxman’s iconic restaurant to the edge of Brooklyn Bridge Park with a warm, modern-industrial room that blurs indoors and out. Floor-to-ceiling sliding glass walls open to the park’s lush landscape, filling the space with natural light and framing views of greenery echoed by abundant indoor plantings.

Once a dim, underused attic, the 2,500-square-foot top floor of this Pacific Heights Edwardian has been reimagined as a contemporary Primary Suite. North-facing roof planes were opened into expansive glazing and sliding doors to capture stunning views of the Bay and Golden Gate, while large windows and new skylights flood the interiors with California light.

A loft-like plan organizes a view-oriented bedroom, with clean lines and disciplined geometry. Steel and timber structures support crisp, white finishes that amplify the light, balanced by dark floors and tailored furnishings for a vibrant, contemporary contrast to the historic floors below.
