A look back at Linden.
After our recent staff show at the original Linden Street studio, we’ve been thinking about how much history is packed into 500 square feet tucked behind Blue Bottle Coffee.
MMclay began here in 2015. MaryMar had been making pottery since 2007, and building owner & fellow ceramic artist Loring Sagan invited her to share the space and help turn it into a working studio. It’s also where her kids, Keenan & Maysa Jane, practically grew up, so Linden belongs to our family story as much as our business story. We grew up here together.
In 2017, a 1964 Globetrotter Airstream became our first shop just around the corner, part store, part neighborhood landmark, until MaryMar moved it to Marin in 2024. By fall 2019, we’d outgrown Linden and opened a bigger studio & showroom on Gough Street.
But Linden? MaryMar couldn’t let that one go.
She kept the original studio as a home for our clay-loving staff, with two kilns, two wheels, a slab roller & plenty of shelving, a place to experiment, develop their own work, be supported, & connect to their own creative practice. Because making a living as an artist and making your own art aren’t always the same thing, & in San Francisco, affordable studio space can feel like a mythical creature.
Here’s to Linden Street, where it all began!
