After nearly ten years of craft fairs, I’ve learned that every maker’s journey is different. What feels rewarding and worthwhile for one person may look completely different for someone else.
I had a decent craft fair last weekend! While I’m grateful for all the support I received, I thought I’d share a few honest insights from the market.
For those who are new here, welcome! I’m Akkshata Kulkarnii, and I create real pressed flower earrings and ocean wave boards. I’ve been doing weekend craft fairs all around the Bay Area, and I’m coming up on a decade in business!
To all my returning customers—you know who you are—thank you for coming back again and again for your favorites. Your support means everything.
This weekend, a couple of young girls stopped by my booth and asked me:
• Is it a good idea to make handmade earrings or resin art as a side business?
• Should I start doing craft fairs?
• Is there enough profit to make it worth the effort?
The truth is, I can never answer those questions for you.
I don’t know your financial situation, your goals, your expectations, or what success looks like for you. It always feels strange for me to tell someone whether they should or shouldn’t pursue a creative business.
What I can do is share my experience.
So I thought I’d show you exactly how my market day went and what the revenue looked like.
Keep in mind: this is revenue only. It doesn’t include materials, booth fees, travel, packaging, taxes, or all the behind-the-scenes expenses that come with running a handmade business.
If you’d like me to make a reel breaking down the expenses side of craft fairs, comment below! 👇
And if you have questions about markets, booth setups, products, pricing, or the realities of selling handmade, I’d love to answer those too.
