Some pieces need a full transformation. This one needed almost nothing.

When a client’s budget is tight, the smartest design decision is knowing where not to spend it. For her parlour, I sourced a round pedestal table already in great shape, with a turned baluster base and stepped feet, and made one small color correction. That’s it.

The rest of her budget went into her nightstands, Sage Advice, in my last post.

It was in her home by July 20, and her cats had inspected the flowers before I could. 🐈

Back in July, a client reached out about a nightstand pair that had already sold. She had a clear vision, and she was upfront that she wasn’t sure about the budget. Sometimes a client is just too sweet. She didn’t want to undervalue my work, but she had a number to work with for the space she was curating.

I told her to take the weekend and be 100% sure.

She came back, and I was so glad to be a part of it. It worked out well for both of us.

These got the full treatment: a sage green body, gilt rococo pulls, a walnut-stained top, and my stamp inside the drawer.

Same sage, three lights: olive in my garage, slate in her daylight, deep green by lamplight. The last slides show them in her home.

Every Leading Lady needs one.

The client who fell for The Leading Lady over a video call came back with a new ask: a single nightstand to sit beside her in the bedroom.

I took it to a deep espresso, kept the sculpted pulls recessed in a dark green that echoes her partner, and saved the surprise for inside. Open the drawer and it’s lined in gold florals and a hummingbird.

Quiet on the outside. A little glamour for the one who opens it.

Now the two share a room.

The Leading Lady

She arrived as one of three tall dressers from a fellow refinisher, in rough shape. But those sleek lines and sculpted pulls were too good to ignore.

At the Alameda fair, she was a star. So much interest, yet she waited for the right person to make her the lead story.

That person found her over a video call. She fell in love on the spot, and somewhere between talking about the pieces she loves, we realized we’d both moved here from Singapore. Some furniture finds its people.

Same vanity. New gown.

This one was never for sale. It belonged to a sweet couple who are retiring and setting up their space in the heart of SF. Her brief was two words: elegance and glamour.

The commission came the same day she fell for The Veridian Tallboy at the Alameda fair. We were packing up the stall to deliver it when she messaged me about her vanity. She wanted me to take it right away. I asked her to take some time first. A piece you live with should be a decision, not a rush.

I took it from cream to deep Veridian green and paired it with a fuchsia velvet stool. The Tallboy and Madame Veridian now live together in her home.

The slate & shadow duo : some pieces are simple yet so unique.

This Bassett furniture set did not come to me in the best of shapes. They had a lot of water damage and thin veneer.

But some Tlc and a lot of elbow grease, I those solid lines started to shine through and I could see my vision coming together.

The solid lines, rosewood face, so uniquely brutalist in style

Matte black base breaks the bulkiness.

Those grains on the top 🤩

This was part of The slate & shadow dresser set.
But it was claimed separately by two set of couple to make each of them part of their new story and new home 🏠

Isn’t that just perfect!

I don’t chase the same forms when curating homes. My client wanted a dresser and nightstand for her room, but to add some interest, we decided to go with a completely different form for the nightstand. But look at how the dark stain and the subtle green ties it all together, just making it belong with one another 💚

This piece almost broke me — literally. Water damage, a cracked door, a termite treatment just to be safe.

Stripped it down to bare wood and stained it dark walnut. That’s when the rosewood slats started shining through.

The Artichoke Lamp : I was not sure about this at first when I spotted it in an estate sale. But I really wanted to give it a try.

The idea was something classy but a statement respecting its scale. So I decided to accentuate the very structure with antique brass gilding wax.
