Report from the Local Ship Modeling Club

The South Bay Model Shipwrights have been active in the San Francisco Bay Area since the 1990s. The club is still active and recently posted highlights from its latest meeting in Santa Clara. We recognize a couple of the models described that were purchased from our shop here in San Lorenzo, CA. It's nice to see our kits enjoyed and shared with others. More importantly, we really enjoy seeing the members of the ship modeling community active and sharing their work with others.

One of the most popular ship modeling products is Amati's Keel Klamper. Fully adjustable plastic jaw clamps hold the keel securely and can be slid to any position along the aluminum bar to accommodate short or longer models. The pivot in the base allows you to adjust the model to any angle and can be tightened to hold it in place as you work on it. Clamps are included, allowing you to secure the base near the edge of your work table.

One of the newest kits in stock is the Yacht America, a 1/75 scale wooden model ship kit from OcCre. The model is a medium difficulty plank-on-bulkhead model kit that measures about 21" long and 18" high when completed.

The American was originally built in 1851 for a syndicate from the New York Yacht Club, with the goal of sailing against the classic yachts of the elite British Royal Yacht Squadron. She lead the regatta around the Isle of Wight, beating the next fastest yacht by 18 minutes, winner her the One Hundred Sovereign Cup as a trophy. This later became the America's Cup.

We've now combined Columbus' ships into a single combo set. Now, buy all three Amati kits together and save $30 over buying them individually! Build them all at the same time, or build them in sequence.

These classic wooden ship kits from Amati are all 1:65 scale. They feature plank-on-bulkhead construction using a double layer of planking of lime wood with a walnut finishing layer. Structural parts are precision laser-cut, wood dowels provided for the masts and spars, wood strips for all planking, and hull and deck details; Fittings of wood and metal included, plus colorful flags, printed cloth sail material, multiple sizes of rigging line, printed instructions and multiple large plan sheets detailing construction and rigging.
