We just got in a bunch of new colors of 4mm Preciosa bicones, including the new glitter finish, which is like a light AB. 🎉🎉🎉

I did hear that as of June 1, Swarovski has changed their policy to allow bead stores to carry their products again, but…having cut out such a large group of their customer base for the past 5 years may have lasting repercussions.

Here is your gemstone fact of the day, brought to you by a beam of sunlight.

Onyx is chalcedony, a cryptocrystalline form of quartz, which means the individual crystals are so tiny, they cannot be seen even with high magnification. There is still teeny tiny space between the crystals, which allows dye to pe*****te deeply.

But what the trade calls black “onyx” is not really that…. Here you can see in a couple of places that this is really chalcedony that has been dyed, and it’s a very dark brown, so dark it appears black.

True onyx is banded black and white, and was traditionally used in carvings like cameos, where the individual layers of black and white could be seen and incorporated into the design. Sardonyx is onyx with brown (sard) thrown in the mix.

Happy beading!

In honor of Earth Day (a day late), here are some of our other customers! They don’t care for beads too much, so instead we make sure they have plenty to eat. We currently have 9 little hungry customers at home, and one at the store, the likes of which we had never seen before! It is a Queen Butterfly caterpillar, which looks similar to a monarch but with slightly different markings and three sets of antennae.

Our first store butterfly emerged today! We had this caterpillar behind the store on some milkweed, and the Chief named him or her Henry. We took Henry home to keep an eye on him/her.
Today Henrietta took flight!

🎉 Sale Alert!!! 🎉

Usually about this time of year, we get a visit from our Czech bead pusher, Shelley. She’s hurt her back hauling bins full of beads, so her trip is delayed until the fall. But that gives us extra time to give our Czech bead wall a little weeding, so look out for new markdowns of 30% and 50% off select Czech strands starting this week! I’m working my way from the top of the wall to the bottom, so more strands will be added over the next few weeks, which ties in to our spring cleaning sale that starts tomorrow! 🎉🎉🎉
