Designed as a family and friends compound in the Napa landscape, this home begins with a close reading of the site: rocky terrain, open views, water features, prevailing winds, and daily patterns of use.

Buildings, paths, and gathering spaces are carefully distributed across the ranch to preserve openness and maintain long views between structures.

Weathered stone, darkened metal, and heavy timber were selected for fire resistance, durability, and their natural connection to the surrounding landscape.

Early concept sketches are a way to think out loud.

At this stage, we are exploring form, siting, material direction, and the relationship between a building and its landscape. Just as importantly, sketches help clients see possibilities before decisions become fixed.

The process is both practical and imaginative, testing options, clarifying priorities, and creating a shared vision for what the project can become.

Split Timber House in Jackson, Wyoming takes its name from the idea of a fallen tree: a long, carved volume opened at both ends to frame light, views, and movement through the home. The upper floor is rotated off axis to create a tunnel-like sense of openness, drawing in daylight from multiple directions and establishing long sightlines across the site.
