Velvet is a woven tufted fabric that originally came from East Asia, with early roots in ancient China and Egypt.
Velvet gets its soft feel from a special weaving method on a double-cloth loom, which makes two pieces at the same time.
Silk: The traditional and most luxurious material, made from silkworm cocoons.
Cotton: A durable, stiffer, and more affordable choice.
Synthetic fibers: Modern options like polyester, nylon, and rayon are common and budget-friendly.
Ancient Beginnings: Early pile-weave fabrics date back to around 2000 BCE in Egypt and 400 BCE in China.
The Silk Road: The fabric traveled through trade routes to Baghdad and the Middle East, where it became a favorite of royalty.
European Expansion: During the Middle Ages and Renaissance, Italian weaving hubs like Venice, Florence, and Genoa perfected production and made velvet a symbol of high status.
