A bedroom is the one room nobody else is going to see, which is exactly why it gets skipped.

Deep navy behind the bed so the wall recedes and the headboard stands away from it. Bedding with a fine, clean texture, enough interest to be worth looking at and never enough to be busy. A nightstand with an open shelf, because the things you reach for at night should not be behind a door.

Guest rooms get all the attention. This is the one you wake up in.

Nobody photographs their drawers. We are making an exception.

Felt-lined inserts, sized for what actually goes in them, so a necklace has somewhere to lie flat and the rings are not in a dish by the sink. One conversation at the drawing stage, and a fraction of the cost of whatever is sitting on the counter above it.

Height is easy to admire and hard to sit in.

A room this tall behaves like a hotel lobby unless something pulls it back to human scale. A tight group of chairs on a textured rug. A long console holding the wall at eye level. Art stacked so it climbs the volume instead of floating somewhere in the middle of it.

The instinct in a tall room is to buy taller things. Usually it is the reverse.

Let one wall do the talking and the rest of the room can relax.

Navy from floor to ceiling with a silver accent pattern running across it, and everything in front of it answering back in warm color. Coral and raspberry in the cushions, a floral canvas above, a bench with inlay worth walking over to look at.

Good taste is not always subtraction. Sometimes it is deciding which one thing gets to lead.

Every kitchen has a spot where people actually end up standing, and it is rarely the one on the plan.

Here it was always going to be the island, so the island is the thing that got the color. Deep navy against a pale perimeter, and seating someone would choose to sit in rather than perch on. The rest of the room stays out of its way.

Most art gets bought to fit whatever space is left over. Worth doing it the other way around at least once in a house.

Our work has never fit neatly into a grid.

So the new site gives it room — whole houses, start to finish, with the thinking left in.

A house takes us the better part of a year. The site, it turns out, was not much faster.

The first ten feet of a house set expectations for everything after them.

Somewhere to put keys down. A mirror at the right height. Light that doesn't leave you squinting into a dark hallway. And something worth looking at straight ahead, so the eye has a destination.

Entries are small. They're not minor.

Most remodels begin with a tile sample. The ones that work begin with the plan.

Materials are the easiest thing in the house to change, and the last thing that decides whether you like the room. The plan is the opposite — where the light lands, how far it is from the sink to the range, what you see when you look up from the counter. Settled early, quietly, and then lived with for twenty years.

This kitchen changed completely. What makes it work now isn’t the finishes.

If you’re remodeling this fall, give the first three meetings to the plan. The tile will wait for you.

White is not the absence of a decision. It is the hardest one to get right.

With no color to lean on, everything else has to be correct. Shiplap running horizontally to widen the wall behind the vanity. The veining in the counter carried up into the backsplash rather than stopping at the edge. A floor with enough movement in it to do the work a bolder room would hand to the walls.

Then there is the part nobody photographs: drawers deep enough that the counter can stay clear. A white bathroom only reads as calm when nothing is sitting out — which makes storage a design decision, not an afterthought.

Restraint is never a shortage of ideas. It is the ideas you don't see.
