Two orders this week, both from folks in the area, both for the same 4x2 bed at 15" deep. One is picking up Tuesday, one Saturday.

That's the size that keeps winning. Every time.

Two 4x2 beds on the bench this week, both 15" deep.

The bottom boards are the part nobody thinks about. They have to sit on the inside rails, not the frame, or the whole thing sags the first time it's full of wet soil. So the rails go in before the bottom, and the boards drop in from the top with a small gap between each one for drainage.

Takes an extra ten minutes. Saves the bed.

Fall planting starts in a few weeks. If you want a raised bed ready when it does, now's the time.

Western red cedar raised planter boxes. 4ft x 2ft, 2ft tall. $125 each.

Cedar handles the AZ sun and won't rot out on you like pine will. Deep enough for tomatoes, peppers and root crops — not just herbs. Liner available if you want one.

Cedar Raised Garden Bed — 4ft x 2ft. $130.

This is the size most people end up wanting. Big enough for tomatoes, peppers, and a row of herbs. Small enough to fit along a wall or fence without eating the whole patio.

Built from cedar, so it holds up in Arizona sun without rotting out on you. Mitered top cap on all four sides, so you get a flat edge to sit on while you work. Legs raise it off the ground — no bending all the way down.

Deeper 15" version available if you want more root room. Liner add-on is $45.

We got our first review a couple weeks back. Four stars, on the wooden cross plan.

Forty-some plan downloads in the last two weeks. The cross plans and the raised garden bed plans are carrying most of it — people building in their own garages, in states I've never been to, from a PDF my daughter and I put together at the kitchen table.

That's still strange to think about.

A cedar picket is 72 inches long. Only 70 of that is usable — the ends are rough and you lose them.

That number runs everything here. Six legs per picket. Three trim strips per picket. Every cut list starts with figuring out how few pickets a build can come down to, because that's the whole material cost.

It's the least interesting part of woodworking and it decides whether a job is worth doing.

Most of what happens before the saw turns on is arithmetic.

No hinges. The lid lifts straight off, which sounds like a small thing until you're cleaning it out with one hand full.

Cedar because it holds up. Screen top so the air moves and nothing climbs out. Built the same way we build the planters.

$185. Add an interior liner for $45 if you want the bottom sealed.

We built one for a family a few streets over last month. Turns out a lot of people here are keeping reptiles in plastic bins because nothing better fits the space.

Two of these went out on the same delivery run last week, along with a custom tortoise enclosure to a family a few streets over.

That's the part of this I didn't expect when we started. One trip, three builds, three different reasons someone wanted wood in their yard.

The plans side has been busy too — the woodworking guides have been downloading steadily, mostly the cross plans, which surprised me.

So here's a question. If I built you one thing for your yard this fall, what would it be?

This is a workbench mid-build, before the top shelf went on.

Twelve 2x4s and two sheets of 3/4 inch plywood. That's the whole material list. No fancy joinery, no metal brackets — just a square frame with the plywood doing the work.

It'll hold 5,000 pounds. People use them for tools, but a few have asked about aquarium stands and pet enclosures, which is what got me thinking about the load rating in the first place.

5ft long, 3ft wide, 4ft tall. I can build it to whatever size fits your garage.
