When seen under a magnifying glass, this antique S***m whale tooth has small dots and connecting lines which form the outline of the scrimshaw. 19th century whalers would lay over the ivory a print and by making a series of pin pricks would transfer the details of the source image. Knowing there was a source image, I used Google lens to search for the original source and was very pleased to find it was Louis XIV.

Just got in this great José Formoso Reyes (1902-1980) Nantucket Basket Purse. It was originally a gift to a member of the Ray family who taught Reyes how to make Nantucket baskets when he first moved to the island.
