Recently I purchased this item from an estate auction. The owner was a curator of a museum in CA. According to his widow, her husband owned this for quite a few years and all she knew was it was from Central America. It measures 16"h x 9"L x 3.5" thick. It is clay with a strange (not like any type of leather I have ever seen. Does anyone have any ideas of the type, age, or any info on this? Any info or help would be appreciated.

I found these while metal detecting in Alton, MO in 2014. They were wedged between 2 very large rocks in a large flood ditch. When I sent pictures and detentions of the horseshoes to the National Horseshoe Museum I received details that they were made between 1753 and 1776 and were from a very large workhorse. The dates happened to be the same dates that City and County happened to be founded. As soon as the details of the horseshoes the local Courthouse and Town purchased the better of the two horseshoes and it is now displayed in the County Courthouse as part of their heritage. The 2nd horseshoe remains in my private collection. I am currently working on confirming and certifying a sizable meteor that I recently found metal detecting. I love uncovering the past.
