Home from the hospital and on the mend, but just a gentle reminder that I’ll be much slower in my response times for the next week or so.

I also wanted to thank everyone who called, texted, emailed, snail mailed, and DMed over the last few days. I’ll get back to you all soon, but I’m feeling the love.

Extra shoutout to my mom Marie Murray for flying down to take care of me for a week. Everyone needs their mom, no matter how old you are. And if you know mine even a little, you know she’s the absolute best person.

And of course another extra shoutout to my husband Joe. I quite literally couldn’t have done this without him. Being married to someone with a severe chronic illness is not only hard on the person dealing with it, but their loved ones, and particularly spouses. I don’t know how I got so lucky, but I did and I’m forever beyond grateful for that.

✨✨✨

Monday morning reminiscing over some of my favorite wedding installations from the last few seasons.

Something that all of my installs have in common? An over-abundance of flowers, like the best growing season you’ve ever had in your garden, translated into a love letter to my couples. There is always at least one element that’s a little unexpected, whether a garlic scape or a weirdo we found in the woods.

My team creates the majority of our installations on-site using a combination of local and imported blooms, usually with a healthy dose of foraging in the tick-laden meadows and thickets for a truly place-based feel.

Within just a few hours, your venue is transformed into a space bursting with life and color and fragrance (and sometimes an insect or two). A floral experience that speaks to the senses.

As I head into a period of “wintering” following surgery tomorrow, it’s such an honor to be able to go back into my photos and look at the insane amount of beauty we’ve created in just a few years. So, I hope you save this post for a rainy day, for a day that could use a little more color.

And if you have a favorite image from this carousel, let me know, okay? ✨

What if we started with something other than flowers?

What if your first conversation with your florist felt more like talking with an old friend than sitting through an interview?

What if we talked about your favorite songs, the artwork you can’t stop thinking about, or how that trip to Portugal changed the way you see architecture? What if we talked about the time you zipped through Thailand on a motorbike and came home seeing the world a little differently?

Those are the details I want to know. The places that have stayed with you, the things you love, the experiences that have shaped how you see the world. Because those are the things that interest me as a designer.

Inspiration doesn’t always look like flowers. Sometimes it’s the colors of a painting, the lines of a building, the feeling of an overgrown garden in an old novel, or the way light falls across a table in the late afternoon. Sometimes it has absolutely nothing to do with flowers until we find a way to translate it.

I believe in the art of human connection. I don’t believe thoughtful design comes from copying a Pinterest board or following a formula. I believe our experiences shape how we see the world, and that those experiences can be the starting point for creating something that feels like it could only belong to you.

Maybe that’s an unexpected combination of flowers and textures, a sculptural installation that transforms a room, or branches and vines that make a space feel almost otherworldly.

If you’re looking for someone to recreate something you’ve seen a hundred times, we might not be the right fit.

But if you’re curious about what happens when we look beyond the obvious and make something together that neither of us could have arrived at alone?

Let’s start with something other than flowers.

I still reach for movement over perfection, especially with the bridal bouquet.

Flowers that feel gathered rather than arranged.

Bouncing cosmos for movement, Extase anthuriums for the wow-factor.

A little wild.

Seasonal and inspired by the landscape.

The process behind a single bridal bouquet begins with a brief. Then months and months of tweaking and designing. Gathering all of the materials needed to snip and shape and create. And finally, a little piece of art, hand-delivered (always a little nervously) on your wedding day.

You know when you’re driving down the highway in late August in Vermont and the medians and roadside meadows are filled with solidago and Queen Anne’s lace and grasses and aster? That’s what inspired this late-summer color palette.

Greens and golds, pops of white, all a blur as you glance out the window on your journey to wherever you’re going.

Seed pods and Queen Anne’s lace nests and ground cherries. Dahlias and lace cap hydrangeas. Cushions of damp moss, its earthy, soily aroma gently catching the breeze.

I’m constantly in awe of what nature has already created, and I strive to weave myself into that story, rather than work against it.

And these beautiful bowls from Florist Supplies & Education created the most perfect vessels for this grounded design.
